We're Flying to DC to Fight for a Fair Farm Bill
Feb. 25-28, 2025 ✈️
Now is a crucial time to stand up for family-scale farmers! On February 26th and 27th, representatives of our 30 member groups will meet with over 40 Congressional offices to champion a Farm Bill platform that prioritizes family farmers, rural communities and consumers over Big Ag corporate interests. We’ll fight for local producers, fair prices, fair credit, and farmland for farmers!

NFFC Policy Spotlight:
MCOOL
On February 6, Senators Thune (R-SD) and Booker (D-NJ) reintroduced the American Beef Labeling Act (S.421) to reinstate mandatory country of origin labeling (MCOOL) for beef. These requirements would support market transparency for farmers and ranchers while instilling consumer confidence in American beef products.
Congress first enacted MCOOL in the 2002 Farm Bill, requiring retailers to clearly label certain food products with their country of origin. In 2015, Congress repealed MCOOL for beef and pork after a controversial WTO ruling against the US.
| |
|
The US now imports more meat than it exports - multinational corporations import meat products in the US cheaply, undercutting US farmers/ranchers who cannot out-compete and supporting poor environmental and labor practices abroad. Restoring MCOOL for beef and pork gives US farmers and ranchers in the US additional, fairer market opportunities for their products AND boosts customer confidence in what they purchase! | |

NOFA-VT Conference Shined a Spotlight on Advocacy
| | |
|
|
On February 15 and 16, NOFA-VT held their annual winter conference at the University of Vermont in Burlington. NFFC's Member Organizer Meg Stratton was in attendance and enjoyed the keynote address by two tireless farmer advocates who are also members of our coalition - Dãnia Davy, Esq., of Agrarian Trust, and Tim Gibbons of Missouri Rural Crisis Center. It was also a pleasure to see the opening remarks from Grace Oedel and Senator Peter Welch (D-VT).
NOFA-VT's winter conference was one of several hosted every year by the Northeast Organic Farming Association's state chapters. For the full schedule visit nofa.org.
