WCCG Honors Joyce Nelson
Joyce has dedicated her life to our community and her work truly fulfills our mission of community enrichment through the promotion of public welfare education and civic improvement.

Thank you Joyce for being YOU!
It was a special day on February 2nd as we honored Joyce Elizabeth (Soler) Nelson for her 28 years of leadership and membership with the Woman's Club of Coconut Grove.

A surprise presentation was made to Joyce in recognition of her unconditional commitment to our Club and community. Joyce has been a pillar of support to our club serving as Public Affair Chair (1996 - 1998); WCCG Art Festival Chair (2008 - 2010); House & Ground Co-Chair (2010 - 2012 & 2014- 2018)

Check out the full presentation honoring Joyce.

Welcome New Member!

Woman's Club of Coconut Grove is proud to announce new member, Dr. Marie Dasborough.

Dr. Marie Dasborough (Marie) is currently a full professor at the University of Miami Business School (since 2000) where she teaches classes in leadership and researches individuals' emotions. She is an elected board member of the Southern Management Association and volunteers as co-president of the Network & Leadership Scholars.

We look forward to Marie's engagement with the Environment and Human Trafficking committees and having her support while volunteering at WCCG events. Marie's WCCG membership was sponsored by Carol White and Billie Baldwin. We are honored to have Marie as part of the WCCG community.

Black History Month

February is Black History Month and the WCCG was honored with guest speaker, Judith Davis, who provided a historical prospective of the Bahamian West Coconut Grove. Judith spoke about the rich history of the West Grove (Little Bahamas) and its unique culture heritage. She explained how the people and churches built the foundation of this community with landmark streets, Charles Street and Evangelist Street, being used to pave the way to early settlement.

Davis also spoke about the Goombay Festival, which originally had over 100,000 participants, the first black church of Miami, St. John's Baptist Church, and the Mariah House, a historic home currently undergoing historic preservation and so much more. Davis, emphasized the importance of preserving and celebrating the history of Little Bahamas (documented on poster boards) for many generations to come.

Thank you Kathy Kesler for making delicious cookies for this meeting, it was well attended with over 80 participants!
Celebrating 99 years!

WCCG member Joan Mueller's birthday was honored at our February luncheon along with all of our February birthdays. This birthday was especially significant as Joan turned 99.

Many are unaware that Joan is not only a member of WCCG but she is a WWII veteran, having joined the Women’s Navy Reserves (WAVES) in 1944 as one of the first women to join the Navy serving as a parachute rigger. Read article about our Joan here. Joan you are a great inspiration to woman everywhere!

Unsheltered Individuals

House & Grounds has spoken to unsheltered individuals, and the organizations who help them, about gentle and effective ways to end their use of club property.
If you are uncomfortable with anyone you see on WCCG property, please call 305-579-6111. This will connect you to dedicated Miami Police Officers trained to treat people and their possessions with respect. They find/offer a sheltered bed for the night.

Many of these individuals are on waiting lists for housing and are understandably frustrated by their circumstance. Thank you for exercising good judgement.
Women's Center in Mkonoo

In honor of our memory of Lynn Bretsnyder, we have established a relationship with one of her benefactors from Tanzania, Africa. Lynn has put funds into a Women's Center in Mkonoo to support women and children through education and farming. We were fortunate to have Dr. Tanya Pergola as a guest at our February luncheon and look forward to collaborating with her on Women's Center projects. We are planning a fundraiser happy hour in May to support the cause.
Attention Ukulele Strummers

Break out your ukuleles and plan to join up with your fellow ukulele enthusiasts. If you want to learn how to play or just be a part of a play along group contact Phoebe to get playing!
Your Volunteerism Counts!

We are so grateful to have such amazing members that can really get things done!

Don't let your efforts go overlooked, report your hours today! Everyone in the Club has hours to report. Did you know that just attending the monthly meeting counts as volunteer hours?
Other than volunteer hours we need project narratives, dollars donated, estimated value of in-kind donations and WCCG dollars spent monthly. This all help us report our good works to the district annually.

Send your volunteer information to Freda McMillan or Sparkie Folkers
