NEW: NFFC's Farm Bill Platform

NFFC just released our robust 2023 Farm Bill Platform, which includes our top policy priorities and reflects our members' dedication to family farmers and their communities, NOT corporate profits. The 2023 Farm Bill is an excellent opportunity to level the playing field for small farmers and create a path to more resilient communities. A more just Farm Bill starts with removing barriers to accessing land, credit, and debt relief for young & historically underserved farmers, while supporting all family farmers!

Priorities addressed in our Farm Bill Platform include the Milk from Family Dairies Act, stopping corporate farmland grabs, improving transparent access to farm credit, prioritizing equity in agricultural policy, and more. Click here to read the full platform.

Farmers and Advocates Return from Congressional Visit

From February 7-9, representatives from 15 of NFFC's member organizations visited legislative offices in DC to promote our shared policy priorities, outlined in NFFC's Farm Bill Platform. The stellar group of staff, farmers, and advocates met with more than 30 bipartisan House and Senate offices! This was an important opportunity for NFFC members to meet with legislators and share their impactful personal stories and experiences. We are deeply grateful for each participant's trust, dedication, and energy devoted to advancing fair farm and food policies.

We shared a new blog on the NFFC website with highlights from the Hill visit - please make sure to check out all of our photos on Facebook, too!

Congress Wants to Block Foreign Ownership of U.S. Farmland. Is This a Red Herring?

Members of Congress have recently introduced legislation that would prevent international investment in farmland, stoking fears about Chinese investments in particular. While internationally based land investment is a definite concern, the largest risk to US farmland comes from investments by US-based individuals and corporations.

Ambrook Research just posted an article on this topic, citing NFFC’s reports in collaboration with the Vermont Law School’s Center for Agriculture and Food Systems (CAFS). NFFC National Program Coordinator Jordan Treakle commented in the article: “Only focusing on foreign corporations does not acknowledge the full scale of the problem, and actually risks exacerbating consolidation trends led by domestic multinational corporations that we see in land ownership and vertical integration in areas like food processing.”

Action Alert with Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance: Tell the USDA, "No Mandatory Electronic Animal Identification!" The USDA recently published a proposed rule that would mandate electronic livestock identification to track cattle crossing state lines. As FARFA reports, mandatory electronic animal identification does not address food safety or animal disease concerns, but instead, unreasonably burdens farmers and ranchers, while giving corporate multinational meatpackers yet another market advantage. Take action on FARFA's website.
