FEBRUARY NEWS
February / 4 / 2019
Dear Forest Hills Family and Friends,

I hope that you are all staying safe and warm this winter!

Given the challenging weather this season, I want to be sure you are aware of our emergency procedures.  In the event that Forest Hills experiences loss of power, our primary phone system will not operate. In this case, please use our 24/7 emergency phone number: 202-422-4095. This is a cell phone that will accept voice and text messages. Please understand that there may be some delay in response time.

We also ask that your loved one have a battery powered flashlight or other battery light source in their living quarters. Forest Hills is equipped with emergency backup generators and our staff have flashlights, but this does not meet the lighting needs of all individual living spaces. Flashlights and batteries are now sold in our gift shop, open Monday - Friday from 10am-11am on the Lower Level.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact:

FHDC Health Care Center Residents: Wanda Mitchell, RN, 202-777-3343 or [email protected]

FHDC Assisted Living Residents: Jennifer Howell, RN, 202-777-3463 or [email protected]

Thank you, as always, to all of the family & friends we get to see visiting us at Forest Hills.

Warmest regards,

Focusing on Heart Health

Valentine's Day isn't the only reason to celebrate in February! This month we also celebrate National Wear Red Day and American Heart Month, making it a perfect time to focus on heart health.

EAT WELL

Eating a diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, while limiting saturated fat and sodium can help support heart health. Get started by including a few key foods in your diet:
  • Tomatoes. Tomatoes are rich in potassium and antioxidant lycopene, which has been noted for its potential benefit on blood pressure. Enjoy tomatoes in a salad, sandwich, or omelet.
  • Fish. Many fish offer a source of lean, versatile protein along with heart friendly omega-3 fats.
  • Legumes. Beans, peas, and lentils have around 4-8 grams of protein and fiber per half-cup serving.

Ceca Award Winner
Monica Jones

Congratulations to Monica Jones on winning the Ceca Award! We celebrated the award with some of the nice things residents and peers had to say:

"Monica is new to Life Enrichment and brings such a positive energy to the team. She knows each and every residents' preference. I observed her getting a glass of ice from the kitchen then setting it on the table; sure enough a resident arrived with a can of ginger ale and Monica brought the ice over to her along with a plate of snacks. The resident smiled and thanked her. Monica continued to make special plates and drinks for each and every resident, speaking softly as she put things together..."This is for Mr. Lee he like's this, this is for Mrs. Andrews...she likes this..." until everyone was served and happy. Monica understands the importance of preference and person-centered care, and it's what she provides to our residents."

Thank you, Monica, for all you do for our residents and our community!
Family Award Winner
Fantnesh Tessema

Congratulations to Fantnesh Tessema on winning a gift card for the special nomination she received from a family member! Here is what they had to say about her:

"Ms. Tessema is one of the CNAs who cares for my wife, who is a resident of Forest Side. Over the last 15 months I have observed, at close hand, how skillful and caring she is, day in and day out. The work is very demanding, but she seems to love it. When I had to take my wife for an examination by a neurosurgeon -- a very stressful mission when the patient has severe dementia -- Ms. Tessema was the CNA chosen to accompany us. She managed to keep my wife calm and even happy, both in the car and at the doctor's office."

Thank you, Fanta, for your personal attention and care of our residents!
