African American caregivers and their loved ones: the role of the heart
Throughout U.S. history, the African American family has faced many hurdles in the race for equity and inclusion. Love was, and is, the key to bringing all of us together to fight injustice. Love is also the force and foundation that provides strength to caregivers of loved ones with incurable diseases or diagnoses, like heart failure (HF).
HF is an incurable, chronic condition that affects over six million American adults (American Heart Association Journal, 2020). Heart failure changes the structure of the heart so that it does not pump enough blood to meet the needs of the body. African Americans are at a greater risk for chronic diseases, including heart disease (Age Wise King County, 2018). Many older adults with HF rely upon unpaid care and daily support from others; studies show that African American caregivers spend more hours providing care to their loved ones, and often have fewer resources and less money to purchase in-home care and assisted living services. Yet, like all caregivers, they play a critical role in maintaining the health and extending the life of older adults with HF.
In February, as we recognize American Heart Month and Black History Month, let’s also show appreciation for those in our community who provide care for older adults diagnosed with HF. It is critical we support their need for self-care in the process. Visit our website to learn more about caregiver support and local resources.
For more information, or to schedule a free Care Talk appointment at a center near you, contact Earnestine Thomas at [email protected] or call 410-313-5969 (voice/relay).
