The Road to Recovery Earthquake updates from Japan Workers' Co-operative Union
Less than a year has gone by since the massive 9.0 earthquake shook Japan. The Japan Workers' Co-operative Union has been working diligently to rejuvenate and revive the branches and member cooperatives that had been most severely damaged in the Tohoku region.
In Ohfunato City, a program has been created that provides business training that links the dominant industries in the region (agriculture, forestry and fishery) with community welfare. The trainees are expected to open a new cooperative business in April of 2012.
JCWU member, Older Persons' Cooperative, decided that each member would donate a day's worth of wages to support the ongoing efforts in Tohoku. In addition to monetary support, individual members have been visiting cities to provide meals and other activities. Members also held a festival for residents in temporary housing. This festival included exercise programs, oral care, and book readings for children. The residents were grateful but expressed concern for unemployment expiration and a need for independence.
