A note from the CVOA Officers
|
|
The vitality of CVOA...
... is a result of the efforts of many volunteers, from our officers, to our board members, our event and trip leaders, our range officers, and our range workers. As they say, "many hands make light work". Are you in a position to become more actively involved with CVOA? As we approach the end of the terms of our officers, and our Annual Meeting, we find that we have some positions to fill:
- President
- Board Members
- Webmaster
- Adventure Coordinator
- Event and trip leaders
If you have any interest in becoming more active with CVOA, and would like to find out more about the opportunities, please be in touch with our outgoing president, Nancy Perry, at
cvoa.president@gmail.com. We look forward to adding you to our roster!
By the way, the 'jobs' are not all work, we do have fun, too! And the board meets only four times a year.

Annual Meeting with Dinner and a Speaker
|
Saturday, March 12, Sugarloaf Inn
Make your reservations now for our Annual Meeting and Dinner. This year, CVOA will have a dinner that everyone should enjoy - particularly those volunteers who typically work for hours on dinner preparations; we will have dinner at the Avery Room at the Sugarloaf Inn.
For $23 per person, members will enjoy a Hearty Italian Buffet, including salads, entrees, dessert, and coffee/tea. The fixed price of $23 includes the meal, taxes, and gratuities. A cash bar will be available for those that would like to have wine, beer, or cocktails. (Per state law, it is not allowed to bring your own beverages to the event.)
Social time from 5:30 - 6pm, dinner at 6:00, followed by the meeting and guest speaker.
Make your reservations now by emailing Cindy Foster at cvoa.secretary@gmail.com, or replying to this email. Include the names of those in your reservation. Space will be limited, and you must have a reservation to attend. You will pay for your meal at the door by cash (exact amount appreciated) or check (to: "Sugarloaf").
Following the dinner, we will have a short business meeting, which will include annual reports, elections of officers and board members, and volunteer recognitions.
The meeting will be followed with a presentation by our guest speaker - many of you have read about Carey Kish, or seen news items on TV about his Appalachian Trail adventures. Here's more about Carey:
Two-Timing it on the Appalachian Trail with veteran hiker and
author Carey Kish
The Appalachian Trail is the most famous long distance footpath in the world, and for hikers who make the grueling 2,189-mile trek from end-to-end, it is unquestionably the adventure of a lifetime. One AT thru-hike is enough for most, but not 56-year old Carey Kish of Mount Desert Island, who decided twice was better.
Join Carey as he describes in words and images his 189-day AT journey from Georgia to Maine, starting March 18 on Springer Mountain and ending October 4, 2015 on Katahdin. Learn about the amazing mountain scenery, the camaraderie of fellow hikers, fun trail towns and precious trail angels, scary wildlife encounters, and the highs and lows of putting one foot in front of the other for six months. Discover how much the trail has changed since Kish first hiked it 38 years ago in 1977 as an 18-year old kid fresh out of Bangor High School.
Kish is author of the AMCs new Best Day Hikes Along the Maine Coast and editor of the AMCs Maine Mountain Guide, and signed copies will available for sale before and after the program.
We hope you will join us at this fun and friend-filled evening.

Winter use of Range increases |
Range Driveway will be plowed all winter
With the plowing of the CVOA range, winter use of facilities there is growing substantially.
"Now that the driveway, a parking area and the roadway leading to the rifle and pistol ranges are open, it seems like every time we're up there we're finding people making use of the facility," according to Neal Trask, Range Chairman.
That's been a somewhat surprising benefit of the decision to plow access to the new building which includes the CVOA storage area.
Reports of increased usage have come from members just checking on things as well as from our plowing contractor, Bill Casey. "I'm surprised at how much traffic the ranges are getting," he explained.
There were some difficulties gaining access earlier this month when the combination lock froze solid and had to be thawed to open. Since then a new lock has been installed with the same combination and, so far, no difficulties have been reported.

Annual Winter Social with Delta Knights Band
|
Food and Dance
The Stratton Community Center was a busy and fun place to be on the evening of Saturday, January 23. Event Coordinators Zoanne and Chris Paradis did a fantastic job organizing the event and lining up volunteers to help make a tasty and fun evening for all of the 90 people who attended. The tables were set with Sugarloaf-styled centerpieces,
and the pot-luck suppe
r held a wonderful assortment of delicious foods. There were many who danced the night away to the music of the Delta Knights, while others simply enjoyed the music.
Thank you to all who contributed to the pot luck supper, and particularly to those volunteers, too numerous to mention, who made the evening as successful as it was. And give extra thanks to Zoanne and Chris for heading up the event once again.
