February was the month to be in Aptos. Despite wind and rain, the new Aptos Branch Library opened on February 4 and 5 to a very warm welcome from the community. During its first four open hours, branch staff delighted in showing visitors the spacious children’s room, the teen room, all the small and large meeting rooms, the Aptos History Museum exhibits, and of course, the over 700 books and materials that started flying out the door.
The art of Lea de Wit provides color and light, even on a grey day, and there are outdoor spaces off both the children’s and teen rooms. And what could be better than a view of the ocean that can be seen as you enter the front door!
The County, Measure S voters, the Santa Cruz Public Libraries system, and the Aptos Chapter of the Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries made this branch possible…yet another step in Realizing the Promise of Measure S and the community’s confidence.
The busy Aptos Branch Friends also carried out the wildly successful Our Community Reads (OCR) series in February. Based on Dave Eggers’ book The Monk of Mokha, there were programs all over the library system celebrating coffee and the culture of Yemen. OCR began with the Aptos Friends Chapter and now enjoys the support of the Capitola, Felton, LaSelva Beach, and Scotts Valley Friends chapters. If you would like to thank OCR for this year’s success and support next year’s series, please consider making a donation to the Aptos Branch Friends.
