In this newsletter, you can expect to find opportunities, events, and other information about UCSF nurses, advanced practice providers, and our global partners working toward global health solutions.
| | CGN Programs, People, & Events | CGN Welcomes the Second Cohort of the Certificate in Global Nursing | | |
January marked an important milestone for the UCSF Center for Global Nursing with the launch of the second cohort of the Certificate in Global Nursing Program. We welcomed 36 nurses and advanced practice providers from Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nepal, the Philippines, Tanzania, and the United States.
Over 12 weeks, scholars will engage in rigorous, inquiry-driven learning and collaborative dialogue, guided by UCSF faculty with expertise in global health, alongside nurse leaders from academic institutions and organizations across the globe. Together, faculty and scholars will examine foundational concepts in global nursing and health systems, with a focus on equity, partnership, and sustainable approaches to strengthening care across diverse contexts.
We look forward to the upcoming sessions and witnessing the contributions this cohort will make as they apply their learning to advance nurse-led innovation and meaningful change across global healthcare systems.

CGN Global Nursing Advisory Council Member:
Strengthening Global Nursing Partnerships

Dr. MaryJoy Kaimuri, PhD, RN, Dean of the School of Nursing at Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Kenya and a member of CGN’s Faculty and Global Nursing Advisory Council, recently returned from the United States following a visit focused on advancing international nursing collaborations.
With a strong emphasis on both local community engagement and global partnership, Dr. Kaimuri is leading the development of nursing education at MUST to prepare a resilient, culturally competent workforce. Her efforts are creating opportunities for cross-border learning, joint research, co-teaching, and shared leadership development.
Dr. Kaimuri also contributed to CGN’s Global Nursing Certificate Program, delivering a lecture on community nursing leadership and the social determinants of health, highlighting the essential role of nurses in advancing health equity. CGN is proud to partner with leaders like Dr. Kaimuri who are strengthening nursing worldwide through collaboration, education, and community-centered care.

CGN Global Nursing Advisory Council Member:
Strengthening Diabetes Care Through Nurse-Led Research in Liberia
| |
Joe P. Davies, BSN, RN, Clinical Mentor and Noncommunicable Diseases Nurse Coordinator for Partners in Health Liberia and a CGN Faculty and Global Nursing Advisory Council Member, has been leading efforts to advance chronic disease care at the PEN-Plus Clinic in Pleebo, Liberia. Joe and his team have strengthened patient data collection, improved monitoring of chronic conditions, and supported evidence-based clinical decision making to enhance care for under-resourced populations.
With support from a UCSF CGN Seed Award, the team is currently conducting a diabetes prevalence study to better understand disease burden and inform targeted improvements in chronic care delivery. Alongside this research, Joe and colleagues have enhanced clinic efficiency through hands-on training, mentorship, and strengthened systems for managing patient and research data, promoting more equitable care for under-resourced populations.
Joe’s longtime collaborator, UCSF School of Nursing faculty member Celina Trujillo, MPH, MSN, RN, and their colleagues recently published a December 2025 PLOS Global Health study evaluating diabetes self-management education within the PEN-Plus program in Southeastern Liberia, highlighting the measurable impact of nurse-led chronic disease initiatives.

Professor & Chair, UCSF School of Nursing
Dr. Stella Bialous has over 30 years of experience in tobacco and cancer control, working both nationally and internationally.
Her work focuses on addressing tobacco use, a leading cause of death and health disparities, and includes extensive collaboration with the World Health Organization and other global partners on implementing the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. She has contributed to the development of key documents on tobacco, cancer, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and has worked with organizations such as the WHO and the National Cancer Institute.
Dr. Bialous has been a faculty member at the UCSF School of Nursing for more than a decade, where she continues to advance nursing leadership in policy, advocacy, and cancer prevention. She also served as President of the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care from 2014 to 2018. Dr. Bialous also serves as faculty for CGN’s Certificate in Global Nursing Program.
We are honored to recognize Dr. Bialous for her exceptional leadership in advancing awareness and fostering international collaborations to address tobacco use, cancer, NCDs, and health disparities. Dr. Bialous also strengthens nurses' capacity to actively engage in tobacco control and policy efforts to improve global public health.

Nurses and advanced practice providers play a pivotal role in improving global population health. CGN's Global Nursing Impact Series offers a platform to highlight their leadership and impact in advancing health equity and to promote collaboration on these initiatives. Each session will feature a 20-minute presentation by invited speakers, followed by a Q&A.*

CGN’s Introduction to Cultural Humility Course offers a foundational exploration of cultural humility within the contexts of nursing, advanced practice, and global health sciences. The course supports nurses and Advanced Practice Providers in recognizing personal bias, understanding how power and privilege shape clinical encounters, and building skills to foster more equitable, respectful partnerships in all settings.
This course is open to all nurses and Advanced Practice Providers, whether or not they are participating in CGN’s global programs.
3 CEs provided.

2026 Community Meetings and Journal Club

Join CGN's Community Meetings and Journal Club to participate in an open forum for nursing professionals to connect, collaborate, and engage with the latest developments in global health nursing. Our meetings are held virtually and are open to all members of the global nursing community, whether you are currently engaged in global health work or looking to expand your knowledge and network. Be a part of the conversation and help drive meaningful change in global health nursing!

Register now and submit your abstract for the 9th Annual Africa Interdisciplinary Health Conference (AfIHC), organized in collaboration with Mzumbe University, on the theme Bridging Disciplines to Address Dual Burden of Infectious and Non-Communicable Diseases in Africa. The conference will be hosted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and online on August 19-21, 2026, with the Pre-Conference Workshop on August 17-18, 2026. The conference is founded and co-directed by Dr. Jerry Ouner (Nutor), PhD, RN, Associate Professor at the UCSF School of Nursing and Faculty for CGN's Certificate in Global Nursing.

Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) is the only hospital in northern Laos that provides specialty pediatric care, offering free services to underserved families in the region. It focuses on improving access to essential health services while supporting sustainable healthcare through training local providers. Volunteering offers a meaningful way to contribute to the hospital's mission and make a difference in children's lives.
Lao Friends Hospital for Children accepts applications for medical and nursing volunteers throughout the year. All individuals interested in volunteering should be able to spend two months at LFHC during their first visit. Anyone interested is welcome to send their resumes to hr@fwablaos.org.
| | Muhimbili National Hospital Introduces a Perioperative Nursing Course in Tanzania | | |
Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), with support from the UCSF Center for Global Nursing (CGN), is launching a five-month Perioperative Nursing Course for registered nurses.
This course, the first of its kind in Africa, provides an opportunity to establish high and consistent standards of perioperative nursing practice for operating room nurses. The blended program of weekly theory sessions, skills labs, and supervised practice builds competence in perioperative assessment, sterile technique and safety, team communication, and protocol-aligned standardized care across orthopedic, obstetrics and gynecology, general and gastrointestinal, pediatric, ophthalmology, ENT, dental, and urology. The course is open to all nurses, with OR nurses especially encouraged to apply.
