Marches and Dialogue
It its my observation that the contentious election is now, leading us to a more divided nation. However the current US political climate is a mirror image of what is going on in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The divisiveness is ripping our world apart. We scream at each other gathering bigger and bigger arguments to prove the stupidity of the other side. This is unsustainable. Fear and anger are ruling the day. We are literally killing each other.
Many of us in America were left with an experience of "what just happened?" with the election of our new President. Our Congress has been both a reflection of the divisiveness and a further a cause of the divisiveness. The approval rating of Congress as of today is 11%. Our newly inaugurated President is at 36% approval rating. "I am against what ever you are for" is not government it is the cynical goal of only being re-elected to be re-elected.
It is very easy to look up and blame the politicians. It is much harder to look in the mirror and figure out what's going on with us. By "us" I mean all of us. One of the most interesting statistics coming out of the election was one particular county in Ohio that went for Obama by 21 points in the last election went to Trump by 21 points in this election. That number made no sense given the huge difference of the two candidates. I knew, I did not understand how that was possible. Since my candidate did not win this time, I was upset, frustrated and very, very confused.
After working through as least some emotions I went into scientist mode and decided I needed to go do research. I heard JD Vance on CNN talking about his book Hillbilly Elegy. It is a story of his family in Kentucky and Ohio, the working poor and the former middle class. It is a depressing story that gives at least one explanation on how that county in Ohio could swing so wildly. I have quoted statistics in previous articles that the most dangerous thing to be in America is poor, white with a high school education or less. Your life expectancy is not good.
The opioid epidemic in this country is a clear indicator of the shape we are in as a country. 3,050 people died of opioid overdoes in Ohio in 2015. That's more than California a state with 3 times the amount of people! There is a lot of attention on how do we get people off of addictive drugs, my question is why would an individual choose to take them in the first place? Why is Ohio so much worse? Why is Ohio ground zero for the opioid epidemic?
Drug abuse is an act of despair and desperation. It is the declaration: "I am in pain and I see no way out, so I will go for numb". Vance's book talks about the culture of despair that exists in his community. It is a culture of poverty, poor education, low expectations and no discipline. In today's economy where all the good jobs are require the opposite of those things, drug abuse seems like a perfectly logical decision.
I am not proposing that all that voted for the President are drug-addicted hillbillies. I am proposing that we need to understand those who are not like us if we want to have sane government that does more than try to stay in power.
The theme of the Advanced Men's Course© this year will be taking responsibility for your prejudice and biases. Having an actual understanding of what biases we have and figuring out how to understand people not like us with out prejudice. All of this is very emotional. If you have tried to have a civil conversation with someone of the opposite point of view from the last election it usually gets very emotional. We need to find the middle again in this country and around the world. It will not begin with the extremist's on either end of the debate coming to terms.
It will come from people who already have a relationship trying to understand each other better. Don't get me wrong I participated in the Women's March last Saturday. I will stand up for what I believe but I do want to understand why people who are not like me have the point of view they do. I promise to listen. I recommend we all practice listening and getting beyond the screaming matches (Facebook included) that will send more people to Washington in the next election who will not see compromise as the enemy.
One of my favorite people who was also disappointed in the outcome of the election said he apologized because "all he did was vote". We will all need to do more than just vote, if we are to get past the divisive, dysfunctional world we have created. We need to reach out and understand why people think the way they do with out the labels that prove that you're an idiot and I'm a genius.
Reading Hillbilly Elegy was a tiny step. Devoting the highest-level course I do, to the conversation is next. I invite you to join the fight to understand each other not just fight each other to make the world work.
As always we invite you comments.
