SPLASH PAD UPDATE - PALISADE PARK

Come this Spring, Orem will have its first publicly accessible splash pad (this is an actual rendering).  This splash pad will be like none other in Utah County.

It will be located at Palisade Park (the former Cascade Golf Course), adjacent to the playground and the pavilion.  Citizens not only weighed in on the need for the splash pad, but also on the design.

The splash pad will cost ~$850,000 and will be paid for by the Orem CARE Tax.
DOG PARK UPDATE - TIMPANOGOS PARK
Orem's 1st dog park will be built at Timpanogos Park, directly off of the Provo Canyon trail.  The piece of property that it will be built on is currently undeveloped.

The dog park will cost ~$175,000 and will be paid for by the Orem CARE Tax.

Here are some of the features:
  • Natural shade from trees and mountains
  • Decomposed granite rather than grass, this is the "ideal" ground as it is firm but requires little to no maintenance
  • A dog washing station
  • A lit entrance
  • Free wifi provided via UTOPIA
  • Benches - with spots for future additional benches to be built
  • Adjacent trail and parking
  • Double-gated entrance
  • Separate small and large dog area
  • Fully fenced
  • Water fountains for dogs and people

CONSTRUCTION - NEW WATERLINE ON  2000 S. FROM SANDHILL RD. TO GENEVA RD.

In preparation for new development in southwest Orem, a 16" waterline is being constructed from Sandhill Rd. to Geneva Rd. on 2000 South.

As was promised during the annexation of southwest Orem, the cost of utility construction is being born by the developer, not by the City.

Assuming weather is good, construction should be completed by early spring.

ADULT SUMMER SOFTBALL LEAGUES

It's time to start thinking about dusting off the old baseball mitt. Adult Summer Softball Signups have started and go until March 26th.

Registration will be done by TEAM ONLY. Leagues will fill up fast so register your team ASAP.

If you have any questions feel free to call Sean at 801-229-7167.

STAY UP-TO-DATE ON UNIVERSITY PARKWAY CONSTRUCTION

Construction on some of Provo and Orem’s busiest roads will be a challenge, but the project team is committed to minimizing impacts to drivers, businesses and the streetscape.

Access to all businesses along the project corridor will be maintained during construction. The goal is to keep traffic moving and help people get to and from local businesses. Mitigation plans are being put in place to handle construction issues like noise and dust and potential changes to landscaping, parking and local events. The project team is currently meeting with businesses and residents along the project route to discuss and address their concerns that may arise during construction.

The contractor has established a dedicated 24-hour construction hotline. If you have any questions about construction, or would like to schedule a construction presentation for your business or organization, please contact our 24-hour hotline at 888-661-8806.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - MOUNTAINLAND ASSOCIATION OF GOVERNMENTS

FIND OUT IF YOUR PROPERTY HAS ACCESS TO UTOPIA

We get questions every day from residents regarding whether or not their property can access UTOPIA.  We have made the process of finding out much more simple.

When you log into your utility account you can see clearly whether or not your property is accessible to UTOPIA.

Visit our webpage to see if your property can connect and to learn more about the questions you may have regarding UTOPIA.

SPRING CLEAN UP (APRIL - MAY)

Watch for a mailed newsletter and mailed postcards announcing our spring clean-up program.  Last year we launched a new program where dumpsters stayed in place for an entire week.  It was wildly successful and we plan to do it again!

                                      April 17-22           Community Park

NORTHRIDGE, HEATHERIDGE, AND WINDSOR NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN MEETING

When: 6pm-7pm Thursday March 16th

Where: Northridge Elementary School (1660 N 50 E) - Media Room

At this public meeting we will present the major components of the Northridge, Heatheridge, Windsor neighborhood plan, and have copies of the draft plan available for review. With consensus at this meeting, we will then take the plan to the Planning Commission and City Council for approval.

OREM PARKS, RECREATION, TRAILS, AND OPEN SPACE MASTER PLAN

As one of the fastest growing communities in the region, an up-to-date and comprehensive  Parks, Recreation, Trails and Open Space Master Plan  is an essential tool for ensuring facilities keep pace with demand in the City. The current plan is out of date, making it essential that a new plan be created that captures the vision and needs of the existing community while providing policy guidance for allocating resources during the next 10 years and beyond.
This requires a planning process that is technically sound and engaging. It also requires robust public involvement to ensure that the preferences and desires accurately reflect existing and future needs.

The City has hired Landmark Design to provide these planning services, and is excited to begin the plan update process.

MAYOR'S MESSAGE:
IF OREM IS NOT ON YOUR RADAR, IT SHOULD BE!

Smart Asset just came out with their list of the top 10 best cities in America.  They analyzed such items as debt, taxes, job growth, tech employment, families,  and affordability.

Orem came in third place this year.  The comments included: "If Orem is not on your radar, it should be.  With a population of 91,000 it is the smallest city to make the top 10 but that didn't stop it from ranking well in multiple studies.  Orem is a great city for families. It ranked first for best cities for working parents and second for multi-generational households. It is also one of the best places for trick or treating, which is certainly a family-oriented activity."

Orem ranks high in many studies performed by Forbes, Bloomberg, Milken, and Gallup such as  "Best Well Being", "Best for Successful Aging", "Safest Place to Raise a Child", "Best Place to Live", and "Best Performing Cities".

But I found it interesting that Orem ranks high as one of the best places for trick or treating.  As I read this article I thought back to Halloween of last year.  The Orem Police Department held a trunk or treat activity at Mountain View High School last year.  I attended this event and was amazed to find thousands of trick or treaters and their parents standing in line to go on to the football field and go by 20 or more police and fire vehicles with treats for them.  Music was  playing and there was even a Cinderella type carriage carrying people around.  I so much appreciated the service that our safety personnel gave at this event.

As I looked back at the many factors that make our city a wonderful place to live, I thought over how much service our community gave this past year.

  1.  Fire Department and City Council serving Thanksgiving Dinner to the Seniors

  2.  Dedicated individuals giving of their time to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound Seniors

  3.  Habitat for Humanity building and refurbishing homes for those who normally cannot afford a home

  4.  Neighbors shoveling snow off of driveways of those who cannot do it themselves

  5.  Neighbors helping people to move in or out of their homes

  6.  Neighbors getting together and cleaning up their neighborhoods together

  7.  American Legion Post 72 giving of their time to perform at over 130 funerals

  8.  Eagle Scouts rounding up toys for children at the Children's Justice Center

  9.  3,100 people coming together to volunteer and help build the All Together Playground

10.  Businesses, friends, and the city helping to raise over $750,000.00 of funding to pay for the playground

11.  A week of kindness where books were donated by many residents for Kids on the Move

12.  IHC providing individual garden plots on their land for residents to raise fresh produce

13.  United Way day of caring volunteers helping at the Scera Park Elementary School and the All Together Playground.

I could go on and on.  But as the Mayor of Orem I wish to thank all of those who over the past 12 months have given so much to help build a better community by volunteering and giving service.

Mayor Brunst
