A Month of Love and Celebration

A Note from Caryl Greenberg, MSW,LSW Director

February, brings with it a unique blend of love, celebration, and reflection. As the winter season lingers, this month offers us an opportunity to embrace the beauty of love, honor significant historical events, and reflect on our personal growth.

February is synonymous with love because of Valentine’s Day. This day serves as a reminder to express affection and appreciation to loved ones. It is a time to celebrate the deep connections we share with partners, family members, and friends. Beyond romantic love, we can also use it as time to cultivate self-love and extend kindness to ourselves.

February is also Black History Month which honors the rich history and achievements of African Americans. Black History Month provides an opportunity to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of the past, paying tribute to the individuals who have made significant contributions. It is a time to celebrate the diversity, resilience, and cultural richness that African Americans bring to our communities. Let us educate ourselves

about the struggles and achievements of this community and work towards a more inclusive and equitable world.

Every four years, February gifts us with an extra day, known as Leap Day. This additional day is added to keep our calendar in sync with Earth's orbit around the sun. Leap Year brings a touch of uniqueness to February 2024, reminding us of the intricacies of time and science. Let us embrace this extra day as an opportunity to do something out of the ordinary. You may like to join us for a Snowball Fun at 11:00 am!

In addition to freezing weather, February brings love and reflection into our lives. It reminds us to embrace the power of love and the importance of cherishing our relationships. It calls for us to honor the contributions and achievements of the African American community. It gifts us with an extra day, reminding us of the precious nature of time. As we navigate this beautiful month, let us embrace its spirit and seize the opportunities it presents to create meaningful memories, celebrate diversity, and continue our journey in this thing called ‘life’!

Caryl

February celebrates American Heart Month and encourages us to focus on lifestyle choices that will keep our hearts healthy and strong. This can include exercise, getting regular check-ups, medication compliance and of course, a healthy diet. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the following foods are a “foundation to a heart-healthy eating plan”:

Vegetables such as leafy greens (spinach, collard greens, kale, cabbage), broccoli, and carrots

Fruits such as apples, bananas, oranges, pears, grapes, and prunes

Whole grains such as plain oatmeal, brown rice, and whole-grain bread or tortillas

Fat-free or low-fat dairy foods such as milk, cheese, or yogurt

 Protein-rich foods:

  • Fish high in omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, tuna, and trout)
  •  Lean meats such as 95% lean ground beef or pork tenderloin or skinless chicken or turkey
  • Eggs
  • Nuts, seeds, and soy products (tofu)
  • Legumes such as kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas, black-eyed peas, and lima beans

Oils and foods high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats:

  • Canola, corn, olive, safflower, sesame, sunflower, and soybean oils (not coconut or palm oil)
  • Nuts such as walnuts, almonds, and pine nuts
  • Nut and seed butters
  • Salmon and trout
  • Seeds (sesame, sunflower, pumpkin, or flax)
  • Avocados
  • Tofu

On Friday, February 2 we encourage you to break out your red shirt and participate in “National Wear Red Day” in recognition of American Heart Month!

The HEA Program is federally funded and was created to help low-income residents with their heating and medically necessary cooling bills. Assistance is available to eligible households through LIHEAP & USF and includes benefits to assist with heating bills and certain emergency needs. Additional funds may be available for medically necessary cooling assistance and heating repairs.

Universal Service Fund (USF)

The USF was created by the NJ Board of Public Utilities to help make natural gas and electric bills

more affordable for low-income customers. Applications for this program are accepted throughout the year. The LIHEAP application is also an application for the USF. You apply for two benefit programs at the same time. Households eligible for USF will receive a monthly credit benefit towards their gas and electric bills.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

LIHEAP is a federally funded program designed to help low-income families and individuals meet home heating and medically necessary cooling costs. The application period for 2024 opens on October 1, 2023. Assistance is provided on a first-come, first-served basis so applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as they are eligible. If you are eligible to receive assistance for cooling costs you should apply for this benefit at the same time that you apply for help with heating costs.

To be eligible for LIHEAP benefits, the applicant household must be responsible for home heating or cooling costs, with payments made either directly to the utility company or included in the rent; and have a gross income that falls at or below 60% of the NJ State Median Income level. Maximum

Monthly Gross Income Eligibility Guidelines for a household of “1” is $3,676, and for a household

of “2” is $4,807.

Those who live in public housing and/or receive rental assistance are not eligible unless they pay

for their heating/cooling costs directly to the fuel supplier. The amount of the LIHEAP heating benefit is determined by income, household size, fuel type, and heating region. The medically necessary cooling assistance benefit is set at $200, which is applied as a direct credit to an active electric account or issued as a single party check to the client.

For more information, call the toll-free LIHEAP hotline at 800-510-3102. If you think you may be eligible and would like more information, or would like to apply, please call or stop by my office for an appointment. 732-329-4000 ext.7676

A note about our monthly parties:

We sincerely hope that you enjoy the wonderful parties we host: it's all about entertainment, food, fun and friends! However, over the course of the last several events, there have been issues ensuring adequate numbers of meals for those who have signed up ahead of time. As you know, the staff works hard serving lunch to you, and if you are not seated by lunchtime, it creates unnecessary stress and extra demand for us. For example, it is difficult to serve you if you sit down at a table that has already been served or whose order has already been taken. Therefore, please ensure that you are you are seated by 11:25 AM. We can then begin to serve promptly at 11:30 right after the Pledge of Allegiance.

As always, it is important that if you have signed up in the lunchroom with Mary or Jody that you call or email them to cancel if you cannot make it.

When you sign up for a party, you select vegetarian or non-vegetarian food. You CANNOT switch from one to the other after making your selection. Menus are available to you on the bulletin board outside the kitchen; please consult them before making your selection for the party.

Lastly, we cannot have a 'waitlist' for parties. It is incumbent upon you to be aware of programs and events that take place at the center. If you are traveling, please make sure to check your email as a bulletin including all information is sent weekly. You are welcome to email Jody and her email can always be found at the bottom of constant contact emails and newsletters. If you email to RSVP for the party please pick up your ticket before the start of the event.

If you are not registered for the party you will not be able to attend any part of the party. We have capacity to include 150 individuals so you will most likely not be closed out. You are also welcome to bring a lunch from home but you still need to register for the program and be seated by 11:30 AM.

As a courtesy, during parties we will set up coffee in the lobby for those individuals not attending the party.

Please reach out if you have any questions.

Best,

Caryl
