Style Tip: Time to Clean Out Your Closet
Spring collections are now arriving in boutiques! You’ll want to shop early for the best size selection, but before you hit the stores, clean out your closet first.
The new trend for clothing organization starts by dumping all of your clothing on your bed (absolutely everything!) and dealing with everything at once. Start by grabbing the pieces you love that make you excited. These should be your absolute favourites that you can’t live without. Next, look for pieces that make you feel you wonderful. What makes you feel sexy, powerful, trendy, cute, feminine? What colours and textures ignite you? Don’t keep anything that doesn’t make you feel or look good. Easy peasy!
Keep clothes that bring you joy!
If the more “feeling style” of clothes sorting doesn’t work for you, try a more methodical approach!
  1. Start the same way by dumping everything from your closet(s) onto your bed.
  2. Remove anything that you can’t wear like pictures, yarn, cleaning supplies etc.
  3. Toss anything stained or damaged.
  4. Group your clothes by similar items before purging. For example, group all your black pants. Take a hard look at them and be honest - do you really need 5 pairs of the same or similar style? Are any pairs faded or well worn? Only keep the best.
  5. Start your donation pile! Include items that you have never worn or clothes that didn’t really fit. Someone else will love them! You can donate, resell, or swap these items.
  6. Look at what remains and ask yourself: Is it a good fit? A good colour for me? Is it a current style or dated? Is the item in good shape? Do you love it? Toss anything that doesn’t make the grade.
  7. If there are any items you are uncertain about, put them in your closet where you can easily find them again. If you don’t reach for it in the next year, you know it should go next purge.
  8. We all have different sized items in our wardrobe. Weight changes throughout our lives. If you want to give an item close to your heart another chance, keep it. But be realistic!
  9. Put items back into your closet in groups. Start with basics in colour sections. Don’t forget to get rid of whites that may have yellowed. Next, group bright colours and trendy prints that make your basics pop. The next section should be jackets and pieces that pull an outfit together. Any favourites or stand alone items should go in their own section.
  10. Keep up this closet organization system so you can put together an outfit quickly.
Finally, remember that you don’t need to stay committed to a wardrobe! Maybe you are changing your identity and lifestyle, and you need to make room for the NEW YOU. Get rid of clothing that is attached to the past and set new wardrobe goals that complement you physically and emotionally.
