February 2019

Message from the Executive Director
Pam Ripling...
I Am and I Will: World Cancer Day is February 4

So, what is World Cancer Day , and why do we have it? Aren’t there enough “cancer days” throughout the year already?

Sources say that this day, February 4 th , is marked “to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008.” Think of it as a global effort to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer worldwide. From 2019 through 2021, the campaign theme will be “I Am and I Will.” The intention for you to fill in the blanks: “I Am A SUPPPORTER and I Will TAKE ACTION.” Or how about, “I Am A SURVIVOR and I Will INSPIRE OTHERS.”

“Whoever you are, you have the power to reduce the impact of cancer for yourself, the people you love and for the world. It’s time to make a personal commitment.”
President's Message:
The Cost of Cancer
Did you know? According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (a component of the World Health Organization), in 2014 the total annual economic cost of cancer was estimated at approximately US$1.16 trillion. We await the 2019 report which is forthcoming. But in the meantime, it’s important to acknowledge that “individuals living with cancer and their caregivers often take a double-hit on their finances. Out-of-pocket expenditures for ongoing and expensive treatments like surgery or chemotherapy and lost income and benefits from taking time off work can combine to create a catastrophic financial burden.” For many, this can lead to drained savings, borrowing money or selling assets. Those who struggle often give up on going to medical appointments because of the cost of transportation, cutting back on food, education and/or defaulting on bill payments.” These are the very same reasons that inspired the creation of Circle of Hope. While the figure above is a worldwide number, it truly brings home the need for (a) the cure and (b) assistance for those fighting right now.

Goodluck
Dan Sterkel
In January, we said “goodbye for now” to our long-time friend and supporter, Dan Sterkel. Dan’s lengthy relationship with the Santa Clarita automobile sales community took a turn when Galpin Motors made the difficult decision to close down their Mazda and Subaru dealerships. His professionalism and integrity were well-known throughout the SCV and he will be missed. Dan’s efforts to support Circle of Hope through Subaru’s “Share the Love” campaigns have made a world of difference to our clients. But fear not, Dan’s putting down some new roots at Galpin Ford in Van Nuys, home-turf for the mega successful auto dealership since 1946. We at Circle of Hope wish Dan all the best at his new daytime digs and are so thankful for our many years of friendship. We know he won’t be a stranger!
Community Spotlight:
Vista Valencia Golf Course
Year after year, the folks over at Vista Valencia Golf have shown us their love and support by running a campaign during October. 2018 was no different, and they recently presented us a with a check for $2,013.00 derived from raffle ticket sales, donations and commemorative flags. Staff, players and ambassadors alike shared their passion for helping Santa Clarita’s cancer patients by supporting the campaign, and, we’re told, have big plans for an even bigger effort this coming October. Thanks to everyone over at Vista Valencia for their kindness and devotion!
New Board Member Spotlight
Rebecca DeLuca
Rebecca DeLuca has been a top Realtor in the Santa Clarita Valley since she moved here in 2011. She is a pillar in the real estate community and is honored to be a part of the Agent Leadership Council, a position entitled to top agents. Rebecca is now also a mentor to young and new Realtors to Keller Williams. She is also highly involved in the community and has been on the board of the Jaycee’s and supported events for many other non profits in our town. Rebecca has won numerous awards for her work in the community as well, including being honored as one of 40 under Forty which is given to those who excel in business and volunteering in the community and who want to make a difference.
Rebecca wanted to make that difference with of Circle of Hope because cancer is near and dear to her heart; her dad recently lost his battle with cancer last June and her sister and aunt both still fight the good fight while Rebecca is always behind them and looks for the best. She is excited to help as many people as she can in their fight with cancer and give them the positive attitude and optimism to get through their ordeal.
Rebecca and her husband Tim chose Santa Clarita as their home, where she also donates her time to her son Nico's school PTA. We are proud to welcome Rebecca DeLuca to the Circle of Hope family!
