This Valentine’s Day, as we celebrate love and connection, it's the perfect time to reflect on the importance of consent in all relationships. At NOVA, we’re dedicated to supporting victims of crime and promoting safety, respect, and dignity in our communities. One of the core ways we do this is by educating individuals about consent: a fundamental principle in fostering healthy, respectful interactions.
Through our prevention education programs, NOVA empowers individuals with the knowledge and tools to understand and practice consent. We use the FRIES model to break down what consent truly means:
Freely Given: A “yes” should come without pressure, force, or manipulation.
Reversible: Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and that choice must be respected.
Informed: Everyone involved should fully understand the context and implications of what they’re agreeing to.
Enthusiastic: Consent is more than just the absence of “no” — it’s about a clear and enthusiastic “yes.”
Specific: Consent applies to each individual activity and should always be clearly communicated.
NOVA’s prevention education programs engage with schools, community groups, and organizations to promote respect, safety, and informed choices. By emphasizing the importance of consent, we help create a culture where everyone feels safe, heard, and valued.
