Seasonal Ideas & Information for February

The following are a list of activities to consider for your February gardening:
  • Vegetables & Herbs
    - Our vegetable, tomato & herb transplants are arriving daily.    Looking for heirloom tomatoes, we will have them this week! We also  have lettuce, strawberries, chives, oregano, tarragon, rosemary, basil, sage and more! We are in full swing for this growing season!   If you start your plants from seeds, it is time to get them started:  arugula, beets, carrots, lettuce, & radishes. We have a large selection to choose from, including organics.   We can also help you select soil, compost and fertilizer for your garden.     Spring Vegetable Planting Guide

    Grow your own strawberries!
  • Fruits & Nuts -  Early February is the best time of the year to prune fruit trees, vines and bushes.  To protect your fruit trees from pests, apply dormant oil or neem oil before new growth emerges in the spring.  Don't apply oil sprays within 24 hours of a freeze.
  • Perennials & Annuals - If your cool-season beds are looking ragged, give them a light fertilization followed by a good watering to start the process of releasing nutrients to the plants.   Now is the time to divide summer and fall-blooming perennials and bulbs.  Ornamental grasses can also be divided. Plant cool season color:  delphinium,  Gerbera daisies, geraniums, pansies, snapdragons, alyssum.
  • Trees, Shrubs & Vines - February is a great month to plant roses.  Consider planting some shrub roses (Drift Rose and Knockout Rose) as they bloom repeatedly through the year.  Make sure to choose a sunny location and one with good drainage.  We can help you select soil and fertilizer for your roses. February is also the month for pruning exisiting roses in your landscape.

  • Lawns - If you are going to use a pre-emergent on your lawn to control weeds, now is the time to apply. Corn gluten is the organic approach and that is what we recommend.

    Corn Gluten Spreadable

Use low nitrogen slow release fertilizers such as Nature's Creation
or Medina to promote steady growth that's more drought tolerant and resistant to disease.

Garden your way to better health
By Melinda Myers
Break out the tools and garden your way to a healthier mind, body and spirit. Gardeners know and research proves that getting outdoors, digging in the soil and gardening help strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, reduce stress and elevate our mood.

Include gardening as a major component of your workout schedule. You'll stretch and strengthen muscles while promoting cardiovascular health and maintaining bone mass. A University of Arkansas study found that yard work as well as weight training significantly maintained bone density in women over 50.
