Inside a Porsche 356A Restoration
By Walter & Rebecca Nolte
Bought in 1972 and driven for decades, this 1959 Porsche 356A was eventually sidelined by rust, age, and a seized engine. Rather than let it fade into history, Walter undertook a deeply personal, ground-up restoration—documenting the mechanical challenges, bodywork surprises, hard costs, and emotional payoff along the way.
This article was originally published on Charlie White's 'DerWhite's Sales and Technical Literature' website in 2011. The website is now maintained by the 356 Registry. Costs of the restoration are based on 2006-2010 prices and not adjusted for inflation. Since the initial restoration, a big bore kit has been added to the engine, the transaxle has been rebuilt, the hubcaps rechromed, and a 17mm sway bar added to the front.
