February Newsletter
Greetings!
A woman in a gray sweater holding a red paper heart over her heart.
February is American Heart Month, a month that the National Heart, Lung, & Blood Institute (NHI) asks us to learn more about risk factors for heart disease and how we all can live heart–healthy lifestyles.

Every year in February, we also observe CHD Awareness Week from February 7 to February 14. Congenital heart defect, or congenital heart disease, is a heart condition that is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Check out these resources from Conquering CHD and discover ways to get involved!

February is full of additional events to take note of including Jewish Disability Awareness & Inclusion Month (JDAIM), National Donor Day, and Rare Disease Day among others. For more disability-related events, please see our Disability Inclusion Calendar.
2023 Career Connections Mentoring Program
The Career Connections Mentoring Program kicked off to a great start with 12 mentoring pairs! Topics for the mentoring sessions have included:
  • Getting to Know You
  • Goal Setting and Reciprocal Agreement
  • Elevator Pitch/First Impressions

On February 13, 2023 the mentoring pairs will be attending a Disability Disclosure webinar. This webinar has been a great opportunity for each mentoring pair to discuss:
  • the benefits and challenges of disability disclosure
  • things to consider when making a decision about disclosure
  • effective ways to disclose and request accommodations from an employer

Over the 6 years we have run this program, this disclosure topic has been reflected on as one of the most beneficial discussions for both the mentees and mentors. Mentors have said it has allowed them to determine different things they can do to help individuals feel welcomed and included in the workplace. Mentees have commented on the fact that this webinar has given them a chance to think about more comfortable ways to maintain their privacy and also ask employers for what they need.

We will be featuring our mentees in "Mentee Spotlights" in our upcoming March newsletter. So look forward to hearing more information about these great candidates and individuals.
