Mulch is the topic of the month on Florida friendly landscaping
Mulching is used to control weeds, protect against soil erosion, improve soil structure and retain soil moisture. Mulch should be applied to a depth of 2-3 inches for best results. Clear at least 12 inches of space from around tree bases and 3-4 inches around small plants when applying.
Pine straw is the most landscape friendly material we can use here in northeast Florida. It breaks down and adds to the composition of the soil, is easy to apply and is cost effective. The next choice is pine bark nuggets. It is a little more difficult to use by bulk and weight but is still a good choice. Be careful when choosing, that the product you pick is pine and not cedar. Cedar bark may not come from our area and may contain pests that will cause damage to our native plants. The last option for our area is rock. There are multiple options to choose from, but it is the costliest option and the most difficult to use. When using rock as mulch, often the plant roots and soil will retain more heat that may keep plants from thriving.
Mulching can decrease water usage and work by keeping weeds under control. It gives a more finished look to our landscaping. Choose the product that will work best in your Florida friendly landscape.
Make sure to check with your HOA Architectural Review Committee before making any changes to the exterior of your property.
