Program Highlights
Cultivating a Culture of Reading at TRCS
By Sandra Fritz, Literacy Coach and TRIP Coordinator

There’s a quiet buzz in the MS common area. Students are huddled around the bookcases. A sixth grader is thumbing through Step Sister. A seventh grader is crouching in front of the “New Arrivals” section, scanning book titles, searching for their next novel, after just finishing Divergent. At 8:20, the middle school students are joining their main characters as they embark on literal and metaphorical journeys as part of TRIP, the Targeted Reading Intervention Program. In TRIP, students are independently reading high-interest books, novels or non-fiction books of their choice, further driving their passion for reading. Students also participate in frequent reading conferences with their TRIP teacher, creating supportive reading relationships, so that students feel encouraged as they read. Recently, an eighth grader informed me that she didn’t like to read until TRIP started. She finally found a book she’s really enjoying and now she loves reading! Another seventh grader likes TRIP for the focused reading time it provides, stating, “I like that we can read what we like, whatever genre, and that we have the quiet time to read.” Carving out the time to read for long stretches is invaluable and helps to cultivate a love of reading, which in turn, supports students in their academics and learning.
In addition to independent reading and teacher conferencing, TRIP creates a space for students to deliver book talks, sharing their opinions and reactions to books with peers while at the same time, practicing their public speaking skills. The book talks are especially helpful for other students to decide what books to read next, acting almost like a movie trailer for books. Book groups and book clubs also take place on Fridays. In the 6th grade, students are reading in book clubs, helping students to connect and socialize around their novels. Ultimately, TRIP is promoting a culture of reading at TRCS and is making a difference!

Keeping Busy at Renaissance!
The 5th and 6th Grade video for the John Lennon Real Love Project produced by Theatre Within is finished. During social studies class, the 5th and 6th grade worked with teaching artists Scott and Beth Bierko from Theatre Within to reimagine John Lennon's Real Love song by writing rewriting the verses with their own lyrics. Each class wrote a verse of the song and sang together to make this VIDEO.
