A rapidly growing trend is solo travel. If you are thinking of traveling on your own, you’re not alone. Do you have a passion for traveling and an itch to go somewhere, take off on a solo adventure and see the world from a new perspective.

Many of our preferred cruise and tour suppliers are offering new solo travel opportunities, including dedicated solo travel departures, reductions in solo travel supplements or waiving supplements entirely. Whether you are interested in adventure, nature, cruising, local culture, or to learn something new, traveling with a small group of like-minded people, from all over the world, can be a very rewarding and inspiring experience. By joining a small group guided trip, you can find camaraderie with travelers who share mutual interests and can become companions — even forever friends.

Regardless of your circumstance, the common denominator for many is that while solo travelers are choosing to vacation on their own, they don’t necessarily want to be alone throughout their journey. Traveling on your own can seem intimidating. One great way for solo travelers to experience all the world has to offer in comfort is on one of our hosted cruises or tours.

Travel is uniquely personal. Perhaps this is your year to embark on your own to cross off something that is on your bucket list. We have several new vacation options for 2019 and 2020. Our team of travel advisers will help you find the right trip to fulfill your vacation desires.

Rick Ippolito and Lenny Kopple
on the maiden voyage of the
Celebrity Edge
Early in December I was offered an opportunity to experience the newest Celebrity Cruise ship, the Celebrity Edge. I can’t imagine that I almost passed up on this opportunity because of my disability. Fortunately, I was encouraged by Lenny Kopple to join him on the inaugural cruise of this amazing new ship. I consider myself blessed to have a seasoned, expert world traveler in our family. You see, I am Lenny’s cousin. Truly, Lenny has been more like a brother to me since we lived together in college back in the 80’s. After his 9 year tour in the Navy, Lenny moved in with me just off FSU’s campus. I’ve always been impressed with Lenny’s love for the open seas, traveling the world on a ship and his desire to share his passion with others to experience all the wonderful places he’s been and amazing ships that he’s sailed.

Through Lenny, I’ve been on several cruises in the past with my daughters to the Bahamas and with the FSU football coaches. But since losing the ability to walk long distances due to a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 2009, it’s been over a decade since I’ve been on a ship. With the uncertainty of whether the ship offered accommodations that would make me feel comfortable or how my body would respond to this adventure on the Edge, I almost turned down Lenny’s offer to join him. However, with a newly acquired scooter and encouragement by Lenny, I decided to go for it. And wow! Am I glad I did! From the oversized accessible cabin and balcony, the extra wide walkways and doorways, to the friendly staff on the Edge, everything on this ship was pleasantly accommodating. The size of the cabin made it easy to maneuver and park my scooter inside without taking up space to walk around inside. Even the bathroom with its roll-in shower was enormous. With banks of elevators, easy to locate ramps and extra wide walkways throughout the ship, getting around the entire ship was easy.

My journey as a solo traveler to Antarctica begins with a single step. I looked forward to my Adventure to Antarctica aboard Hurtigruten’s Midnatsol expedition vessel. The journey was truly land of silence with nature doing the talking and the whitest of ice. I saw the bluest of skies and the elements doing the sculpting of icebergs and floes from the comfort of my cabin. It was wonderful to see wildlife welcoming us into their home as a visitor, and they do entertain you with their antics.

The educational onboard lectures all about what you have been seeing around you were very informative. If you are a bird enthusiast, they had onboard scientists who will point out and describe them to you. If you are a camera enthusiast, they will work with you to get the best photos. If you are fortunate, you will have a former astronaut who will describe observations from space.

The best is the last, and that is the bragging rights of surviving Drake’s passage. This by far one of my most favorite vacations. I am already planning my next expedition journey – One of my travel wishes is the 29 Day NW Passage Ultimate Expedition from Nome to Halifax.  Thank you Chynell for helping me with all the planning.
