OUR TRAVEL JOURNAL
Rock Mountaineer
by Samantha Mancia

Rocky Mountaineer   was by far the highlight of our trip. From the moment we entered the train station, we were treated with top shelf service and greeted with smiles, fresh coffee and live piano music, which is a great way to start the day.

We were lucky enough to travel on Rocky Mountaineer's GoldLeaf service, which not only lived up to our expectations but exceeded them. The staff is friendly and entertaining, and the amenities don't disappoint. Plus, the comfort of the seats was unparalleled - you can adjust the temperature, pitch, lumbar support, and leg rest.

Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury train journey, offering only SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf services. The main difference with GoldLeaf service is the view (windows are full dome car vs. panoramic), and the meals which are served in a separate dining car with GoldLeaf instead of at your seat. Overnight accommodations for both classes are done in a hotel rather than on the train itself, which was a nice way to break up the journey.

The food is gourmet, sourced locally, and freshly prepared on board, with options for dietary requirements available. The seating for on board dining is done in two shifts, with wonderful snacks for the group dining second so they don't get "hungry". Seating is open in the dining car so that you can mingle with others on board, but there are also some seats where it’s set just for 2 in case you or your partner prefer not to socialize.

The views from the train are stunning and do not disappoint. Being in the industry I am accustomed to seeing highly edited photos of destinations, which are often more spectacular than the real life experience. With Rocky Mountaineer, however, the marketing photos are spot on to the experience itself.
My Galapagos Trip
by Erik Xochimitl

This past August, I was fortunate enough to travel to Ecuador to visit the Galapagos Islands. On my way to the Galapagos, I made a quick stop in Quito. This was my first time traveling to South America and I wanted to get the most out of my adventure. All my travel plans, such as tickets, hotel stays, transfers, meals, guides…etc., were secured thanks to Metropolitan Touring. Here is how my adventures started…

Day One started off with my arrival in Quito. A representative from Metropolitan Touring was waiting for me at the airport, ready to take me to Casa Gangotena where I would be staying for two nights. The representative, who would also be my tour guide the next day, was friendly and courteous. The representative was a local from Quito and was knowledgeable about the city and the people in the city. Day one ended with my arrival to the hotel, which is an amazing hotel! The staff was welcoming and helpful! The hotel also had amazing roof top terrace with a wonderful view of the plaza and church.

The second day started with a tour around the city. Some of the most notable places I visited during my stay was the Virgin of Quito and the Historic Center. The Virgin of Quito, also known as " Virgin of El anecillo" is a giant statue located at a hilltop that overlooks the city. After visiting the statue, we headed back to the main center of the city. From there the tour guide took me on a walk around the city and we visited El Mercado Municipal San Francisco, which is a market where locals visit to buy fresh fruits and meats. We then visited the city’s independence square. Due to a lack of time, I wasn’t able to visit many of the places I had on my list, but because I loved the city I will be back again someday!

The third day started early Monday morning, as I packed up my things to head back to the airport to catch my flight to the Galapagos Island. After a few hours of traveling, I landed on the Galapagos Islands a little after 1pm. The first thing I noticed upon arriving was how peaceful it was compared to Quito. The tour guide picked us up from the airport and we started the trip with lunch and end the day with a visit to the Charles Darwin Research facility. I got the opportunity to see the famous Galapagos tortoises!
The fourth day started with a boat ride to the Santa Fe Island. Upon landing, we were greeted by sea lions and blue footed booby. After the morning walk, I went on my first kayaking experience. It was amazing! We ended the day with another walk on the South Plaza Island.

The fifth day started with another morning walk on North Seymour Island where we saw more blue footed booby, hawks, and other types of bird whose names I can’t remember. After the morning walk, I went snorkeling and got the opportunity to see amazing sea creatures, such as King angelfish, Yellowtail Surgeonfish, marble rays, and much more! The day ended with another afternoon walk where we also spotted some flamingos.

The sixth day was probably the most exciting because as we were headed to our morning hike, the tour guide spotted a group of dolphins swimming in the open sea. The tour guide instructed the boat operator to make a detour and join the dolphins. It was amazing! There were at least 20 dolphins and some them were jumping out of the water. After our detour, we headed to Bartolome Island for our morning hike up the island to get an amazing view of Pinnacle Rock. After the hike, as we were headed back to the ship, we saw penguins at the edge of the island and made our way to get a closer look. The Sixth days walk was probably my favorite day. The day ended with an afternoon walk on the lava field.
Traversing the Peruvian Amazon with International Expeditions
by Maria Angeles

Seeing the Amazon is one of those top 10 experiences of your life and International Experiences makes sure you have a memorable time. I had the privilege to travel with International Expeditions July 2018, we had a few days of epic Amazonian rain and I was beyond content. From the time you arrive to Lima, every component of your trip is carefully taken care of so all you have to worry about is taking in every single detail of your surroundings. You get treated to delectable meals, tour through Iquitos just before you embark on the Zafiro and delve into the Amazon!

Going aboard your floating home for the week is like you’d been there all along because everyone has already learned your name. Your room’s view is the lush Amazon with floor to ceiling windows so you never even think twice about not having a TV. Experiencing the Amazon begins from day one when you get to go out on the river and getting out there doesn’t mean you’re exploring on your own. Each zodiac is equipped with refreshing drinks, cold towels and two amazing naturalists to help you spot the wildlife. It really takes that experienced eye and ear to find you the animals you went there to see with your own eyes.

Being on this adventure treats you to seeing animals in their natural habitat, I got go see every animal that was on my list to see in the Amazon. In case I haven’t already said it, I have wanted to go to the Amazon since I was a child, I grew up reading those National Geographic magazines. So what were the animals I got to check off my list you ask? Poison dart frog, bird eating spider (only saw a baby and it was already too big for my arachnophobic ways), baby anaconda which we saw through a jungle walk with a man who knew the jungle like the back of his hand and knew exactly where to find these animals without disturbing them much. A caiman and capybara which we saw during a night excursion. Piranhas which we saw while fishing for them, you’ll be happy to know piranhas aren’t as dangerous as most people actually think they are. Sure they have extremely sharp teeth but they only go after raw meat so unless you’ve just injured yourself, you are safe swimming with them - which by the way I got to do! We also got to see pink dolphins, yes they are pink and you have to see them for yourself. I even saw animals I never even knew existed! For example this red snake that can swim and this bird called the patoo (the only bird name worth remembering haha) - it was a blast trying to find this bird until your eyes hurt but so worth it once you see it. Not so fun was seeing that snake swim across the river.

On top of the amazing wildlife adventures, International Adventures has established relationships with local communities giving guests the opportunity visit Amazonian villages. You are welcomed into their homes, get to see how Amazonian beer is made (something I will not spoil for you, feel free to email me to find out), you visit the school and meet with the kids. Be sure you let your clients know about bringing cash along so they don’t miss out on souvenirs because once you leave Iquitos there are no more ATMs for a week and your visits to the villages are a treat of handcrafts you won’t find in a store.

If I haven’t made it clear, I had an amazing time on this trip and any of your clients who have been talking about seeing the Amazon would be remiss if they put it off for much longer. Being on this trip you get to see wildlife in their natural habitat, taste Peruvian cuisine while gliding along the Amazon river and share all these things with people who have a fervent love for their home and jobs. Traveling w ith International Expeditions means traveling with friends you never knew you had.

OUR TRAVEL PARTNERS
e i About Micato Safaris
Back in 1966, Felix Pinto, one of Kenya’s most highly regarded farmers, started a luxury safari company.
Yes, Africa is our home — we’re fortunate to call it that — and we’re thrilled to share it with our guests. We raised our children on a farm in Kenya, quite close to Karen Blixen’s famous coffee plantation. And we began and built our company here in the land of our birth. So you see, when you travel with Micato you’re travelling with more than just a company — you’re travelling with our family.
