"A Day at the Waldorf School" tour, which takes place just once-a-month. It's a great view into what your own child is doing in class, and a peek into the future when you visit the classes above your child's age group. Cap it off by interacting with our High School students, which is a great confirmation of the benefits of Waldorf education and how well prepared the older students are for college, and for life!

Pets Without Walls Donation Drive
|
A HUGE thank you to the community for supporting this year's second grade donation drive. Our efforts went to the “Pets Without Walls” program, sponsored by the Helen Woodward Animal Center. With your help, the class collected items for both homeless humans and their animal companions, and on Tuesday, the children loaded an entire van full of very helpful items. In fact, after loading up the van, there was hardly any room left over for the passenger, a four legged friend who also came along to say thank you! By the way, Bobby is up for adoption....

Cabaret is this Friday and Saturday!!
Cabaret is a fun-filled fundraiser at which our HS students show off their many talents via musical numbers, skits, circus acts, and so on.
Following in the footsteps of past successes, the students are introducing a few new twists this year:
$5 discount for students = their tickets are only $20 (adults tickets remain $25)
For a reserved table of 8 seats ($200); there are a few small (2-4) seat reservable tables also ($100).
On-site parking for only $5
There are also some exciting new features:
An extensive raffle, with pretty amazing prizes
Dinner is $10 for home-made Naples-style pizza and salad!. There will also be coffee, tea, and Italian soda available for purchase.
Tickets can be purchased at either campus front office, on Parent Square or at the door.
This event is for Grades 6 and up.

In January, our 11th Grade performed their Eurythmy Fairy tale Baba Yaga, taking it on tour to Sparrow Charter School and Pasadena Waldorf School.
Congrats to the class and Ms Kokos for such an amazing performance!

- “The Life of Rudolf Steiner,” Wednesday, 2/5/20, 8:30am, Music Room—Bruce Laurelin will be presenting the life and times of Rudolf Steiner. Bruce gives us an inside peek into the Waldorf teacher training curriculum.
- “The Snake and Lily: What Inquiring Minds May Want to Know!”, Wednesday, 2/12/20, 8:30am, Music Room—Join Deborah and Candy as they share all things about the Snake and Lily (including when it will re-open)! They will discuss the results of the survey put out in October as well as information about the store’s history, purpose, and ways that it supports the Waldorf Curriculum and pedagogy. They will also share some fun crafts and activities to do with your kids over breaks, take questions and suggestions, and will also have several drawings for prizes for those in attendance. We look forward to seeing you there!

Betty Staley
, A Waldorf teacher and adult educator for over fifty years and co-founder of Rudolf Steiner College, is the author of eight books, including two on adolescence. In her latest book, Tending the Spark, Meeting the Middle School Student, her wisdom shines through, offering help to parents and teachers of youngsters in middle school.
And to continue our EID work, we will welcome
Monique Marshall
. A 30-year teaching veteran, she is a founding member and current board member of SoCal POCIS (Southern California People of Color in Independent Schools). Monique passionately works to create multicultural learning opportunities that spring from her young learners’ naturally inquisitive worlds.

We are launching our first ever WSSD Lending Library!
This intention is to help with sustainability by creating a new system, so instead of purchasing things your child may only wear "one time" you may pop into the Library and borrow what you need. The Library will be for all grades, Early Childhood- 12th!
Any and ALL community members are welcome to borrow or donate.
Be on the lookout for a monthly schedule to have the opportunity to check out any items your child may need.

Big News from the Snake & Lily!

We have received the permit from the city to start work on the Snake & Lily and are optimist we may be able to re-open sometime in March. Once we have a firm date we
will post our Grand Re-Opening details on Parent Square.
Please plan to visit us at this event as we will be having special sales and a special "drawing" at the end of our first week.

In the meantime, the
Snake and Lily will be the topic of a PEP on Wednesday, February 12th from 8:30 - 9:45 am in the Music Room.

We will be featuring over the next few months, the qualities of Waldorf graduates as written about in the Waldorf Research Bulletin....and we couldn't agree more!
The primary characteristic reported about Waldorf graduates is the holistic and integrative quality of their thinking. Waldorf alumni/ae are perceived as thinking flexibly, often “outside the box,” and integrating seemingly unrelated subjects with clarity and courage. One professor commented on his Waldorf undergraduate’s ability “to think creatively, to assimilate information as opposed to memorizing isolated facts, [as well as] his love for integrating physical movement with intellectual content areas.” Another, reflecting on several Waldorf students he had taught over the years, reported that “all have the same broad approach to education. They are flexible, creative, and willing to take intellectual risks.”

Eden Village West is a farm-to-table residential Jewish summer camp in Northern California for ages 8-16 featuring culinary arts, organic farming, homestead crafts, wilderness skills, sports, music, and more!
WSSD Parent Melissa Behar:
"Summer 2020 will be my daughter, Sarah's (8th grade) 3rd summer at Eden Village West and she loves it! The camp values are very much in line with Waldorf values and we love their "Culture of Kindness" and connection to nature and sustainability. Being Jewish is not a requirement!"
