Community Recreation Center Survey

Check your mailbox! You may have been one of the 8,000 randomly chosen residents to receive a survey about a Grand Junction Community Recreation Center. If you received one in your mailbox, please take the time to complete the survey! The data from the survey will be critical to inform the City’s path forward regarding a Community Recreation Center. An indoor Community Recreation Center could include such elements as indoor and outdoor pools, a gymnasium, a walk/jog track, and other community spaces.

Botanical Gardens Walkway Improvement

The Parks Division is working to replace the existing pathways in the greenhouse and butterfly house. This facility is City-owned and the existing pathways, constructed with wood, are beginning to show significant wear. Crews are installing a new composite decking material, better suited for the humid environment. Upon completion, the new pathway will offer a fresh look and will be more sustainable from a maintenance perspective.

Bear Sculpture at Lincoln Park

Have you seen the new sculpture watching over Lincoln Park? This piece of art is the work of artist John Kessler and was donated by Gary and Laura Dean. The bear weighs 4,500 pounds, is 11 feet tall, and is made of lava rock!

New art is displayed at City Hall and the Avalon Theater. At City Hall, visitors will see the work of the Uptown Art Colony (UAC), a group of 12 Grand Junction artists who share the love of creating art and common space in which to do it. The walls at the Avalon Theater are covered in art pieces by the Brush & Palette Art Club, the oldest art club in Grand Junction.

Lincoln Park Stadium Renovations

Construction to the Lincoln Park Stadium is moving along. After a crane failed and fell onto the newly built steel and field, new material is on the way to keep the project moving forward. The general contractor, Shaw Construction, is working hard to reestablish the project's original timeline of completion before the Junior College World Series (JUCO).

Tree Removals

The Forestry Division identified a total of 11 very poor condition mature trees within Whitman and Emerson Park. The health of these trees has declined beyond the point of treatment options to recover health, and removal was determined to be the best course of action. The addition of over 50 new trees in these parks will help to recover the lost tree canopy.
