FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

February is Black History Month, our favorite time of year! We've been celebrating Black Excellence all month long through music, conversation, and community.

A Word From the Kids

"As a Black child, I know there’s gonna be cracks in the road as I become an adult. Stuff’s gonna happen, and some stuff has already happened. If I want to become one of the biggest football players out of Wilmington, I could make a big difference. There’s not a lot of players from Delaware. I want to show people that you can do this no matter where you come from."

-Benjamen, 5th grade

Benjamen was one of our rap soloists at We Hold These Truths. We've been talking to Ben and other choristers about their accomplishments and future goals as part of our February #BlackExcellence celebration on social media. Read on to learn more and to hear his solo!

WHO: You! Gifts to the Choir School, starting at just $5, will be "stretched" by the prize pool and help us win additional funding.

Black History Month at the Choir School

Glory from Selma

We Hold These Truths was a huge success!

There was something powerful in the room at our annual Black History Month Concert! The music explored themes of racial injustice and inequity in America as well as Black joy, resilience, and excellence. Thank you to our families, ticket buyers, and subscribers for an electric, supportive audience!

Celebrating Black Excellence Online

On social media, we've been celebrating Black History Month by spotlighting the achievements of Black composers, historical figures, and our choristers. Here's a sneak peek of some people that we've celebrated. Join us on social media to learn more about these amazing examples of Black Excellence!

Imani - Choir School Chorister

"I never was able to read music before, I never understood how to, but the Choir School has helped. I’m getting better at the guitar, and I did not know I could sing that high! Voice lessons have been fun. I know how to belt now, I can control my vibrato. I’ve also made friends with a lot of people lately. It’s been awesome, they’re like family."

Clifford Brown - Jazz Trumpeter

Born and raised in Wilmington, Brown is one of the most influential jazz musicians and finest trumpeters of the mid-20th century. His local legacy lives on in Wilmington's annual Clifford Brown Jazz Festival.

Zanaida Robles - Composer

Dr. Robles is an award-winning Black American female composer, vocalist, and teacher. She is a fierce advocate for diversity and inclusion in music education and performance. We performed her work "Can You See?" at We Hold These Truths.
