Have you received our recent Annual Appeal letter
from the Board of Trustees?

Each year the library sends out  two appeal letters asking for donations: from the Board of Trustees (usually in November) and from the Friends of the Whelden Memorial Library (in May). Please help us ensure the longevity of our much loved library by donating to either one of these appeals (or both).

As always, we appreciate the generous support that you give us

throughout the year. We continue to strive to offer the best services, programs, and materials. We have been working hard to update our collection and have recently been focusing on large print books and audiobooks. We hope you have enjoyed some of the recent workshops, author talks, social media classes, and children's programs offered at Whelden. Please keep up to date with all events and activities by visiting our website or signing up for our newsletter (on the website or at the library)!

Highly recommended by Ellen Russon :
Abir Mukherjee's Sam Wyndham mystery series

The first books in this marvelous series by Abir Mukherjee were two of the best books I read last year. I am looking forward to the third installment, coming out in March 2019. Beautifully written, this crime series set in 1920s Calcutta and filled with historical detail, has everything: fascinating settings, great plots, intriguing characters, wit... Start with Sam Wyndham #1: A Rising Man.

"Splendid...Captain Sam Wyndham is a winning creation."- The Times (London), Crime Book of the Month

"An enthralling debut" - New York Times

"This stirring, entertaining first mystery bursts with lively, colorful historical details about colonial Calcutta. The developing relationship between Wyndham and Banerjee is a delight." -  Library Journal ( starred and Debut of the Month )

"Brilliant. Wyndham is an intriguing protagonist, offering crisp narration that's sometimes slightly arrogant, sometimes amusingly self-effacing. Add in clever dialogue that's laden with double entendre, and what more can a hardcore whodunit fan ask for?" - Bookpage ( Top 10 Mystery of the Year )

"The novel has a great sense of time and place (be prepared to mop sweat off your brow from the heat!), a fascinating mystery, and an intriguing ending. Definitely recommended!" - Historical Novels Review ( Editor's Choice )

"This atmospheric sequel to A Rising Man establishes a strong sense of place by showcasing in rich detail the life of a wealthy maharaja with his wives, concubines, and hundreds of children. Mukherjee further develops his brooding, introspective, and flawed lead protagonist, who relies on his partner's in-depth knowledge of Indian culture and traditions." - Library Journal ( starred )

ABIR MUKHERJEE is the winner of the 2017 CWA Historical Dagger Award for A Rising Man , which was also shortlisted for the Edgar Award . A Necessary Evil is the second novel in the series. Smoke and Ashes will be released in March 2019. Learn more at
