In Taekwondo & in life, respect and courtesy are just as important as physical strength and technique. They are the foundation of martial arts and guide how we interact with instructors, classmates, and even ourselves.
Respect and Courtesy are two of the five tenets of Taekwondo, and they teach us to:
• Bow to instructors and fellow students as a sign of mutual respect.
• Listen attentively and follow instructions without interrupting.
• Show kindness and patience to others, both inside and outside the dojang.
• Handle victories with humility and defeats with grace.
Respect extends beyond the mats - it applies to school, work, and family life. The way you treat others reflects your discipline and character as a martial artist.
Bowing in Taekwondo isn't just a formality - it's a symbol of mutual trust, respect, and humility. Whether bowing before entering the mat, before sparring, or when thanking an instructor, each bow carries meaning.
Challenge for this month:
Be mindful of your bow. Each time you bow, take a second to remind yourself why you train and what respect means to you.
