February was a month of deep reflection for us at Horizons as honor the history, experience and contributions of our Black community.
We sit in deep gratitude for Black families, leaders, artists, educators, and everyday change makers who shape and sustain the vision and heart of our communities.
As the month concludes, we are holding on to what it means to carry this intention forward in our programs, our partnerships, and our everyday practices.
To do so, we must honor and acknowledge the lived experiences of our Black siblings, and remain deeply rooted in both learning and unlearning language, behaviors, mindsets and norms that continue to marginalize and harm our Black community.
As part of our commitment to not reproducing harm, our staff is embarking on an intentional capacity building journey with the Anti-Oppression Resource and Training Alliance (AORTA) to deepen our understanding of how anti-Blackness shows up in our community, in our work, and within ourselves. We recognize that we are all responsible for actively working to disrupt and dismantle it.
This work is not symbolic, it is structural. We commit to listening deeply, taking meaningful action, and building spaces where Black youth, families and staff can thrive with dignity and care.
