As February comes to a close, I am encouraged by the continued achievements and engagement across our SOM community. From student research contributions and faculty leadership to celebrations that foster connection and well-being, this month reflects the well-rounded excellence of our learners and educators.
Thank you to everyone who joined the Town Hall on February 17 and for your ongoing commitment to open dialogue and shared progress. I am grateful for the energy and compassion that define our community and look forward to the meaningful work ahead.

SOM Student Contributes to Precision Oncology Publication
Student Doctor Wynn Bastianelli, OMS-II, contributed to a peer-reviewed paper published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology: Precision Oncology through her work with the Center for Precision Medicine for High-Risk Pediatric Cancer at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Bastianelli helped advance the manuscript, coordinate contributors and support the submission process, reflecting her growing interest in pediatric oncology and collaborative, research-driven care.

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Alex King on Hands-On Healing
Dr. Alex King, an associate professor at
Rowan-Virtua SOM, combines osteopathic manipulative medicine and medical acupuncture to treat musculoskeletal pain through a holistic, hands-on approach. In addition to caring for patients, King directs the OMM residency program, conducts research on treatment outcomes and shares educational content on social media to broaden understanding of osteopathic medicine and the body’s natural capacity to heal.

SOM Celebrates Day of Giving Success
Thank you to the many donors and volunteers who supported Rowan-Virtua SOM during Rowan University’s Day of Giving. The university raised more than $431,000 from over 3,000 donors, with strong participation from the SOM community throughout the day’s events and challenges.
The Philanthropy Scavenger Hunt returned, raising $4,550 in sponsored owls to benefit the SOM Annual Fund, Francis Levin DO Scholarship, Simulation Center and The Shop at SOM as well as other funds. We appreciate all of your support, which makes a real difference for our students and programs and helps make this day fun, meaningful, and unforgettable!

Build Your Own Bouquet
In honor of Valentine’s Day, the student doctors designed and put together their own bouquets. Each person selected their favorite flowers and arranged them into unique creations. The celebration also included heart-shaped soft pretzels, along with refreshing lemonade.

All-Star Sports Youth Clinic
On Tuesday, February 24, the Office of Student and Alumni Engagement and 20 student doctors hosted participants for a soccer-themed night of games and activities. Participants warmed up with stretches and then enjoyed soccer drills, wrapping up the night with a big soccer game. It was great to have so many volunteers and athletes join us!

Pet Therapy
Dr. Barry Hoffman and his wife, Barbara Hoffman, brought their certified therapy dogs to Stratford to comfort students, faculty and staff! Students enjoyed a much-deserved break spending time with the dogs!

Black History Month Gala
The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) proudly hosted the Black History Month Gala on Monday, February 16. The evening brought together students, faculty, and guests for great food, fellowship, and a lively Black History Month–themed Jeopardy-style competition, where teams showcased their knowledge for a special prize. We were especially honored to welcome our guest speaker, Dr. Melvin Ways ’23, whose remarks made the celebration both meaningful and inspiring.

Pre-Health Advisor and Education Dinner
The Office of Admissions hosted a Pre-Health Advisor and Educator Dinner on February 19 in the Academic Center MPR on the Stratford campus. The event brought together local advisors and educators who mentor high school and undergraduate students interested in health care careers. Attendees engaged in networking, mentorship, and meaningful conversation, strengthening connections that support future applicants and enhance community partnerships.
