Gaylord Nelson, a former U.S. senator, founded Earth day after a devastating oil spill in Santa Barbara in 1969. The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22nd, 1970.

For the past 50 years, Earth Day has been celebrated every April 22 by millions of people each year, with the goal of promoting awareness for the health of our environment. Why should we continue to celebrate this holiday? Some people may view it as just another holiday, but with serious concerns about our changing environment being studied and addressed today by prominent scientists and politicians, many citizens are adapting to more environmentally-friendly ways of living every day, not just on April 2

Each year, Earth Day has a new theme, and this year's theme is "Invest in Our Planet".

Subaru of America invites all of our Eco-Friendly Retailers and their Green Teams to brainstorm ways to support this year’s Earth Day theme, because Earth Day is a nice time of the year for a Community Involvement activity. Here are some thought-starters:
  • Help with the Canopy Project, which donates one tree for every $1 donated.
  • Call your local utility company for tips on how to become “greener”. Your utility company will have lots of tools to help you implement different practices.
  • Plan a teach-in for your staff. It's important that the staff know what your organization has already implemented to achieve this goal.
  • Chose re-usable utensils and dishes in the breakroom
  • Plant bee and butterfly-friendly landscape around your building

We recommend retailers make plans to highlight what’s going on at your store on Earth Day, during Earth Week, or the entire month of April, especially through updating your community through Social Media.
