Volunteer News & Updates

February 2024

EXTRA DAY, EXTRA IMPACT

As February graces us with an extra day, we are reminded of the precious gift of time and the remarkable impact we can achieve with it. This month, as we prepare for our much-anticipated Leap Day event, I am continually inspired by the dedication and hard work of our volunteers. Your relentless efforts, whether in the meticulous planning and execution leading up to the event or in your ongoing commitment to serving our senior neighbors, truly embody the spirit of making every day count. Your contributions empower our seniors to lead fuller, more vibrant lives, creating a ripple effect of positivity and support within our community.

I am thrilled about the opportunity to celebrate this collective impact together on Leap Day at Something to Talk About. It promises to be a night where we not only reflect on our achievements but also look forward to the endless possibilities that our shared commitment to service holds. I look forward to seeing many of you there, as we come together to share the difference we make, one day and one act of kindness at a time. Thank you for the joy you bring to others.

With Warm Regards,

Kerri Sutter

Transportation Updates

As we work to fill our Transportation Specialist role, we want to extend our sincere gratitude for your grace as we navigate filling rides. We appreciate you, our valued drivers, checking into Assisted Rides more often as we are transitioning. Everyone has been incredibly helpful picking up additional rides and understanding when when we've had a few bumps in the road. Many thanks to each one of you!

Winter Weather Precautions:

With the holidays, winter weather is also upon us. Above all, the safety of both our volunteers and Care Receivers is our top priority. We strongly encourage you to review our Winter Weather Guidelines to stay prepared and safe. You can access these guidelines here: https://scvnmchenrycounty.org/winter-weather-guidelines/

2/29 | Something to Talk About! Office Closed

Join us for an unforgettable night of music and memories. We're leaping into something new this Leap Year. Something to Talk About promises just that -- a night you won't want to miss! A night of soothing jazz, dueling pianos, cocktails and merriment, all benefitting Senior Care Volunteer Network. Get your tickets today!

Current Volunteer Opportunities - We are always welcoming new volunteers to our team, however, below are some specialized needs we have.

Grocery Delivery Program Assistant - Each year SCVN works with area food pantries serving homebound seniors with food assistance and grocery deliveries. This essential service can only be possible with volunteers. Our program is growing and making an immense impact in the senior community. We are seeking an SCVN volunteer to come into the office the first and third Monday each month to take grocery orders over the phone in the afternoon. In addition to taking orders, it is also an opportunity to connect and engage with our care receivers. Please reach out to Erica, Program Services Coordinator, to learn more about this valuable role.

Intake Team - As the senior population grows, our care receiver population also increases. Just as volunteers have an onboarding and orientation, our care receivers have an onboarding and assessment. We are looking for volunteers with a healthcare, hospice, or social work background to be part of this vital team. This volunteer would enjoy meeting new people with variable demographics, have strong written and verbal communication skills, and pay close attention to details. You are often the first face of Senior Care Volunteer Network. While assessing the new care receivers, you are also welcoming them to our community and sharing our services with them. Approximately 6-10 hours monthly. Training provided, please reach out to Silvia, Intake Coordinator, to see if this is a fit for you.

Lending Closet Support - Did you know SCVN lent out nearly 1,500 pieces of medical equipment last year and we are on target to do even more this year. This is only possible with our committed volunteers. We are looking for volunteers who enjoy cleaning while making a difference - have 1 to 2 hours a week, bi weekly or even once a month to help clean medical equipment at our SCVN office. This opportunity is incredibly flexible-your schedule, your jams-making a huge contribution in the community. Training provided. Bonus, we have great coffee, teas and cocoa at the office and often treats. Reach out to Yolanda, Operations & Lending Closet Coordinator or Kerri, Volunteer Coordinator, to set up an appointment today!

Two Weeks until Something to Talk About!

Get ready for an even more welcoming experience at Something to Talk About, just two weeks away! We've listened to your feedback and are thrilled to announce that we've added a single ticket reserved seat option. Join us as we come together, ensuring every attendee feels valued and part of our vibrant community. Don't miss out on this opportunity to connect, share, and make a difference.

Card Making

This past week, volunteers shared the love at our SCVN office. Together, we made 110 birthday cards, 69 bookmarkers and 71 Valentine’s Day cards while enjoying treats made by the Cary-Grove National Honor Society. These small tokens of joy will go far with our seniors who receive them. Thank you! It was a fun event and we look forward to hosting again.
