Honoring Black Leaders Who Shaped the Community Health Center Movement

In observance and celebration of Black History Month, the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) recently highlighted several key figures whose work laid the foundation for equitable healthcare access across our country.

The movement, deeply rooted in the Civil Rights era, was driven by advocates such as Dr. Lula (L.C.) Dorsey, who played a vital role at the Delta Health Center in Mississippi; Dr. John W. Hatch, a pioneer in addressing social determinants of health; Jessie Collins Trice, BSN, MPH, founder of Miami’s first Community Health Center; and Dr. Robert Smith, who provided medical support to civil rights activists.

Their efforts continue to inspire the work of health centers today, ensuring access to quality healthcare for all.

American Heart Month

February is recognized as American Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death in the United States, making it essential to focus on prevention, early detection, and lifestyle choices that promote heart health.

A heart-healthy lifestyle includes a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while limiting saturated fats, sodium, and added sugars. Regular physical activity, such as walking, jogging, or engaging in other forms of exercise for at least 150 minutes per week, helps strengthen the heart and improve circulation. Managing stress, avoiding tobacco products, and maintaining a healthy weight also contribute to better cardiovascular health.

Monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar regularly can help detect risk factors early. Routine check-ups with healthcare providers ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.

This February, take proactive steps to care for your heart and encourage others to do the same. Small changes can lead to significant improvements in heart health and overall well-being.

Heart Health Resources

Children's Dental Health Month

Children's Dental Health Awareness Month is observed each February to promote good oral hygiene habits from an early age. Establishing proper dental care routines can help prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues that may impact a child’s overall well-being.

Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and visiting the dentist regularly are key components of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. A balanced diet that limits sugary foods and beverages also plays a crucial role in preventing tooth decay. Teaching children proper oral hygiene early sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Regular dental check-ups allow for early detection of potential issues and provide an opportunity for professional cleanings and preventive treatments. Parents and caregivers can support children’s dental health by encouraging good habits and making oral care a positive experience.

Mental Health Matters

Helping to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.

February 14-20, 2025 is designated as Random Acts of Kindness Week, providing an opportunity to explore the psychological and social benefits associated with acts of kindness. Research in psychology and neuroscience has demonstrated that engaging in kind behaviors contributes to emotional well-being by reducing stress, enhancing mood, and strengthening social bonds.

Scientific studies have shown that kindness can positively influence brain chemistry. Performing acts of kindness stimulates the production of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters that promote a sense of happiness and emotional stability. Additionally, kindness can reduce cortisol levels, which helps mitigate stress and anxiety.

Simple yet effective actions, such as offering sincere compliments, expressing gratitude, or providing assistance, can significantly impact both the giver and the recipient. Participating in volunteer activities, donating to charitable organizations, or offering emotional support offer the opportunity for a broader impact.

At West Cecil Health Center, promoting kindness aligns with a broader commitment to mental health and well-being. Creating a culture of kindness within healthcare settings and the wider community fosters positive interactions and reinforces the importance of emotional support in daily life.

This month presents an opportunity to cultivate kindness as a proactive approach to enhancing mental health. By incorporating kind actions into everyday interactions, individuals can contribute to a healthier, more connected community.
