This February, the newsletter is focused on, of course, love. Specifically, we’ll be sharing our favorite love inducing pose or practice. This past January, my cat, Gotas, and I said our goodbyes after a 16-year love affair. My yoga practice with him, as well as with my other sweet cat, was a reflection, expression, and manifestation of love.
Gotas was with me as I grew into adulthood and as I made my way on my own, so he knew me, in many ways, better than any human. I remember coming home and telling him about my first yoga class and how excited I was. As my practice with yoga deepened and I developed a consistent home practice, my cats partook. Sometimes they would insist on attention and climb all over me to get it. More often, though, they would sit peacefully on my mat and purr, as if they, too, were experiencing the calming of the nervous system, the quieting of the mind, and the creation of space. Gotas loved to sit in my lap as I meditated, and I don’t think he missed one opportunity to lie on my chest in savasana.
Clearly, Gotas was very much a part of my practice on the mat. More powerful, though, is what he taught me about love off of the mat. Our love was unconditional. He was loyal, tolerant, and patient. He was affectionate and gave fully of himself. He allowed me to simply be me and, no matter the mistakes I made or what was going on in the world around us, he never judged; he saw the good in me. Our animals and all of earth’s creatures, including humans!, have countless lessons in love to offer. We simply have to open our hearts and listen.
I sure will miss my sweet yogi cat, but I know that experience and expression of love will last forever.

With love,
w/ Meeraj Moosa

Cabin fever got you down? Time to hit the yoga playground! Yoga asana can sometimes get quite serious, but the act of play can certainly enrich our knowledge of self (svadhyaya), so it seems imperative to add a healthy dose of play to our work on the mat. This workshop will involve creative individual, partner, and group work, so come ready to learn, discover, and play well with others in this non-competitive and fun practice!
