ForEverglades, the Everglades Foundation's annual dinner dance, is known for bringing in top-name entertainment. Sting. Dave Matthews. Jimmy Buffett. This year, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler will headline the 10th annual event with his touring band, Loving Mary.

Sat., Feb.7 | STA-E1

Audubon Society of the Everglades invites TAS to join them for a tour of Stormwater Treatment Area-1E in Palm Beach County. For those planning to carpool, this trip is limited to 20 participants and reservations are required. No fee. Contact Brian Rapoza for details, including meeting place and time.


 

Sat., Feb. 14 | Everglades Nat'l Park Photography

Trey Mitchell will lead this all-day trip in Everglades National Park. Photographers of all abilities are welcome. Meet at 6:00am at the Coe Visitor Center. There is an entrance fee to the park. Bring lunch


 

Sat., Feb. 21 | Sharl Valley/Loop Road

John Hutchison will lead this trip. Meet at 8:00am at the airboat concession on the north side of Tamiami Trail (US 41), one mile west of the Shark Valley entrance. There is an entrance fee to Shark Valley. Bring lunch.
 

Sat., Feb. 28 | Southern Palm Beach

Nancy Freedman will lead this carpool trip. Meet at 7:30am at Wakodahatchee Wetlands (13026 Jog Road, about 1.5 miles north of Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach.) No fee. Bring lunch.

the Richmond Pine Rocklands --

This imperiled habitat is not a slum! 

Tues., March 3 | Commission Chambers | 9:30 a.m.

Commissioner Moss is sponsoring a resolution to declare the Richmond Pine Rocklands (see map, area in blue) as a slum or blighted area, thus creating the fabricated need for to enlist Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) to rehabilitate and redevelop the area.

 

The Richmond Pine Rocklands is not a slum! The rare habitat is home to a number of endangered species, including recently re-discovered Miami Tiger Beetle.


Join the Miami Pine Rocklands Coalition at the Board of County Commission meeting on March 3 and stand up for the largest tract of Pine Rockland left in the County outside of Everglades National Park!

The period parlor at our Nationally Registered Historic Doc Thomas House headquarters is transformed into a vibrant art gallery during SOMI Art Walk season.

 

Join Artist Deana Conley and the South Miami K-8 Center 4th Grade Class for their opening party exhibition of "What Birds Eat" as part of the February SoMi Art Walk. Begin your Art Walk journey at our Historic Headquarters, where TAS members can park for free on our Steinberg Nature Center grounds. Enjoy a glass of wine from our donation Bird Bar, and stroll into town to enjoy more of our burgeoning local art scene.

 

The exhibition will hang at the Doc Thomas House throughout February. Thirty percent of the proceeds from the sale of all art benefit Tropical Audubon Society.

2015 Great Backyard Bird Count!
Contribute to Citizen Science from your backyard or kitchen window

February 13-16 | Global, sign up today.

 

Bird Watchers of all ages and backgrounds will count birds to create a real-time snapshot of where birds are this month. 

 

Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online Citizen Science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real-time.

Amendment 1 & Floridians for Clean Water Rally

February 18 |Old Capitol, Tallahassee| 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

 

Join Amendment 1 advocates, Floridians for Clean Water and numerous environmental organizations to rally for proper allocation of Amendment 1 dollars to fund projects that will protect our environment and provide clean water for current and future generations of Floridians! Buses will transport  participants from key locations around the state. Your participation key to making this rally a resounding success.

Flock to TAS for the TGIF Winter Food Truck Migration hatching beneath the shady canopy that comprises our Steinberg Nature Center, a 3-acre native oasis in the heart of South Miami.

 

Forage for your Supper among unique savory and sweet food vendors; dine alfresco at communal picnic tables or tuck in under the Chickee; slake your thirst at the donation Bird Bar; wander Nature trails; tour the historic Doc Thomas House; and listen to a chorus of birds sing the sun to bed.

Solar Dogs Light Up the Keystone Stage --
February Conservation Concert Series!

Sat., February 28| 5530 Sunset Drive | 7 p.m.

 

Conservation Concert devotees are already saving the date for our February 28 ConCon featuring Solar Dogs. The enduringly popular Miami-based string band's nostalgic, sweet music is considered "the definitive South Florida sound," according to Michael Stock, host of WLRN's Folk and Acoustic Music program. Bring a blanket, your sweetie, children, or a friend and come out to enjoy a laid-back "Old Florida" evening.

A donation BirdBar, courtesy of Republic National Distributing Co., provides liquid refreshment and a designated food truck sates appetites. Additionally, neighboring TAS community partner restaurants (George's, Sports Grill SoMi and Whisk Gourmet) offer takeout.

Gates open at 7 p.m., music starts at 7:30 p.m.


Admission: $10 donation, children free. Picnic Tables available on a first-come basis.

 

Parking: Limited parking is available on the TAS grounds via the 55th Avenue gate. Limited free parking along 56th Avenue. Metered parking available on Sunset Drive; various garage and valet parking options within 1-3 blocks; South Miami Metro-Rail Station approx. 5 blocks.

Thanks to involved citizens, the Florida Senate has already received more than 3,800 comments urging Senators to dedicate Amendment 1 funding to Conservation. But we need more to keep those comments coming! 

 

Please shared your comment with the Senate's Environmental Preservation & Conservation Committee. Tell your friends to also send a note to the Committee members urging that Amendment 1 dollars be spent on water and land conservation projects, not on infrastructure!

Following the recent series of attacks to Pine Rocklands (UM-Walmart-RAM, Miami Wilds Park, Palmetto Bay Village Center), Tropical Audubon, concerned partners and neighbors banded together to create the Miami Pine Rocklands Coalition to protect the Richmond Pineland Tract (see map below) and any other parcel of Pine Rockland remaining in Miami-Dade County.
