Welcome to Carpe Datum’s Federal Data Prospector (Vol. 3, Issue 12) newsletter. With the advent of March and one full year of COVID-impacted life under our belts, we are all beginning to think about warmer weather, getting vaccinated, and, hopefully, a return to something more closely resembling our normal lives. Normal life at Carpe Datum revolves around scouring government sources in search of relevant data & data analytics contracting opportunities for members of our rapidly growing community, as well as pouring over reams of news stories and organizational announcements to curate those most germane to our beloved industry-of-choice -- the never-dull world of Data & Data Analytics!
As always, please share our newsletter with friends, colleagues, and loved ones -- we're small, scrappy, and reliant on word-of-mouth marketing to spread the love and joy of Carpe Datum - Click here to sign-up.

In other data news, on February 24th, Federal Computer Week (FCW) published an interesting article entitled, Billions went to fraudulent unemployment claims in 2020, IG memo reports. In this article, the author, Natalie Alms, describes how more than $5.4 billion was paid to potentially fraudulent unemployment claims between March and October of 2020, and the actual number of payments doled out to fraudulent claims is expected to be "much larger," potentially in the range of tens of billions of dollars, according to a watchdog report released today.
- “ETA (Labor Department's Employment and Training Administration) said in reply comments that they added an identity verification tool to its Integrity Data Hub, a centralized, multi-state system that state agencies can use to cross-match claims and receive fraud alerts. It also said that some states have bolstered their fraud detection and identity verification tools, and the report noted that the ETA sent out letters to states last year to remind them of their roles in addressing fraud, fraud management techniques and options for assistance from the department."
