Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector (Vol. 4, Issue 21) which happens to be the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to Data & Analytics companies who share our passion for serving the Public Sector. This week’s theme is the Department of Defense and their seemingly unquenchable thirst for data and analytics. Much of the news coverage of the last week was driven from the major GEOINT Symposium in Denver, as well as the Government's ever-expanding use of new and innovative data gathering techniques and technologies, like low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Check it out.

In other data news, on April 26th, Federal News Network published an interesting article entitled, Pentagon shifting Project Maven, marquee artificial intelligence initiative, to NGA. In this article, Justin Doubleday describes how the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is evaluating the progress of “Project Maven” as it prepares to take over the artificial intelligence initiative and integrate it with a broader range of efforts to apply machine learning to geospatial intelligence.

  • “NGA Director Vice Adm. Robert Sharp said the agency would be ‘calling on industry’ with regards to the Project Maven transition in the coming months. The agency has repeatedly stressed in recent years that it will need to use artificial intelligence and machine learning to process and analyze the fast growing amount of satellite imagery and other GEOINT data available from both government and commercial sources … the program has also expanded beyond imagery in recent years. It also uses AI to exploit ‘CEM,’ which stands for ‘capture enemy material’ in intelligence parlance, as well as ‘maritime intelligence and PAI,’ or publicly available information."
