Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector (Vol. 4, Issue 17) which happens to be the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to Data and Analytics companies who share our passion for serving the Public Sector. Interestingly, as we are putting the finishing touches on this week’s issue, we happen to be reporting from a major Defense Industry Trade Show/Conference (Sea-Air-Space 2022) on the outskirts of Washington, DC – it’s quite amazing to see 15k people crammed into a hotel ballroom. Thus, in keeping with our (very) loose tradition of identifying weekly themes, this week's issue highlights the Department of Defense and several exciting Data-intensive initiatives, including one where this community’s direct involvement is essential!

Special Notice (SN) – Department of Army, Cyber Command (ARCYBER) Technical Warfare Center (TWC), in collaboration with the Cyber Fusion Innovation Center (CFIC) – Data As A Service Assessment Event - Army will host an Assessment Event (AE) to identify the expertise for access to, and distribution of, various data streams to allow analysts to provide actionable insights for data-informed decisions to drive operations. Data-driven decision-making requires timely data acquisition to inform and develop knowledge and actionable insights. For example, access to publicly available information (PAI), social media, ad-tech, crawl, or other online data that is enriched or unenriched, and geo-locatable when possible, in order to allow the US Army to assess the Information Environment (IE) efficiently and effectively.
In other data news, on March 30th, GovConWire published an interesting article entitled, Air Force’s Data Fabric in Maturation Stage. In this article, Summer Myatt describes how the U.S. Air Force is not quite where it wants to be in the maturation of its data fabric; however, the service branch has made significant progress recently, according to Air Force officials.
- “As organizations see an exponentially increasing amount of data from a myriad of sources, Sanjay Sardar (SVP, SAIC) said the focus must be on ‘the contextual understanding of data' for citizens and data scientists alike … this common understanding will be even more critical as organizations begin to implement AI technologies and systems. He added, ‘We also have to start pushing and making sure that those who are using the data have that data literacy, understand where it’s coming from, understand what the context is as we get into AI so we get the right analysis and the right interpretation.’”
