In other data news, on December 15th, NPR published an interesting article entitled Can Big Data Really Help Screen Immigrants? in which the author, Joel Rose, highlights how U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, hopes to build an automated computer system to help determine who gets to visit or immigrate to the United States..

  • “Immigration officials say these concerns are overblown. They insist they are months, if not years, from actually building an algorithm like this. And they're backing away from the original idea of having a computer make the final determination on who gets a visa. "That's just not the case," says Clark Settles, assistant director in charge of National Security Investigations at ICE, who oversees the project. "There's not going to be some A.I., artificial intelligence, making a decision on whether people can come to the country or whether they can stay here."
