Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector (Vol. 3, Issue 40). Hopefully, everyone in our Federal Data & Analytics Community had time this weekend to reflect on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Of course, many of us have our own unique, life-altering, and unforgettable experiences from that day. Personally, as a member of a very large team of contractors performing our oral presentation (for an automated credit decisioning system) at a federal agency located within one block of the White House, the memories are no less vivid today than they were two decades ago. Those strong feelings of fear, anger, and confusion as I was forced to walk from Vermont Ave. to Georgetown University Hospital, where my wife was taken with very premature labor pains from our first child, who was trying to make an early entry (by three months!) into this world, have never left me. Luckily, that baby boy stayed put for two months and today is beginning his second year of college. Unlike many others who were less fortunate that fateful day, I was lucky to be able to walk home and eventually meet my son. So, with that said, let me borrow a phrase and say emphatically … “Let’s Roll”!
In other data news, on September 10th, Brookings Institution published an interesting report entitled, Using AI and machine learning to reduce government fraud. In this article, Darrell M. West describes how artificial intelligence (AI) is being deployed by the U.S. Federal Government to create a tech-based monitoring process in order to ensure that the large magnitude of the federal budget plus the enormous amount of money that has gone into American COVID-19 relief funding is going to the intended recipients.
- “To summarize, it is an exciting time for responsible AI innovation in the federal government. Algorithms are transforming agency performance in many areas and helping to improve worker productivity, service delivery, and financial oversight. Yet there remain major challenges that must be overcome in order to gain the full benefits of the AI revolution. There are a number of reforms that, if adopted, will make AI more responsible, will train the workforce, and allow agencies and departments to be more effective in monitoring budgetary and financial transactions. Making progress in these areas will enhance public sector action and provide taxpayers with greater confidence regarding government performance.”
