Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to Data & Analytics companies that share our passion for serving the Public Sector. This week, we lead off with the Department of Defense Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office's open call for artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) solutions that can be rapidly deployed across the department. Responses are requested in the form of 5-minute video presentations, and should address topics from the DoD's strategic focus areas, which include situational awareness & decision-making, predictive maintenance & supply chain matters, and workforce management activities.

Department of Defense, The Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) — Tradewind Solutions Marketplace - This initiative, entitled the “Tradewind Solutions Marketplace” will solicit, collect, assess, and curate AI/ML, digital and data analytics solutions, and make those solutions available through rapid acquisition methods DoD-wide. The Initial Strategic Focus Areas for the Solutions Marketplace include: Improving situational awareness and decision-making. AI/ML, digital and data analytics capabilities applied to surveillance, reconnaissance, and/or perception tasks such as imagery analysis to extract useful information from raw data and equip leaders with increased situational awareness.
In other data news, on February 9th, CyberScoop published an article entitled A year after outcry, IRS still doesn’t offer taxpayers alternative to ID.me. In this story, Tonya Riley describes how the IRS and many states continue to use the identity verification services offered by ID.me despite mounting pressure from Congress, privacy advocates, and industry critics. Much of the collective angst appears to be centered around ID.me's use of automated facial recognition technology and the federal government's lack of vision and effective implementation of GSA's Login.gov functionality.
-
“'I’m not surprised that IRS has not shifted a year later,' said Jeremy Grant, coordinator of the Better Identity Coalition and a former NIST official. 'Digital identity proofing presents real challenges — particularly when it comes to use cases that require high assurance digital identities — and there aren’t a ton of options in the market that can deliver user-friendly and equitable solutions. And I don’t know that the GSA is in a position to meaningfully change that.'”
