Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with a U.S. Navy sources sought for near-real-time global freight intelligence and commodity flow data to support maritime domain awareness and economic analysis. The system must provide global visibility of traded cargoes by type, quantity, and value, with weekly, monthly, and quarterly updates.
-
Department of the Navy, NAVSUP Global Logistics Support — Access to Global Trade Data Base - The US Navy has a requirement for online access to highly accurate and detailed near real time freight intelligence and commodity flow trade data. The global trade dataset shall support integrated planning, research, development and production of finished research and analysis on all aspects of maritime trade. Access to all data shall be available 24 hours 7 day a week. To effectively support these efforts, the US Navy requires access to highly accurate and detailed open source information on cargoes, commodity types, and the vessels, companies, ports and terminals that affect commodity cargo flows.
In other data news, on December 26th, Politico published an article entitled ICE’s interest in high-tech gear raises new questions: ‘What is it for?’. In this story, Alfred Ng reports that ICE is rapidly expanding its surveillance arsenal with over $300 million in new spending on facial recognition and billion-dollar skip-tracing contracts. Enabled by unprecedented bulk access to IRS and HHS data granted through a series of executive orders, this buildup signals a broader domestic surveillance regime targeting critics and dissenters alongside immigrants.
-
“The orders give the new data-sharing agreements a modicum of legal protection if they were to be challenged, said Alex Joel, a former civil liberties protection officer for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. “The agency’s actions would be less likely to appear arbitrary or ill-considered, but rather, would form part of a concerted interagency effort to achieve a national goal set by the head of the Executive Branch,” Joel said.”
