Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to Data & Analytics companies that share our passion for serving the Public Sector. Our featured opportunity this week is from HHS's Administration for Children and Families (ACF), who seek to "continue the processing, housing, and dissemination of high-quality data sets, and related activities to increase the knowledge base in the child welfare field." While the solicitation is structured as a systems-integration program, we believe the requirements for integrating, standardizing, and distributing data from hundreds of child-welfare datasets present an opportunity for a data or analytics company to play a key role as a member of a larger team.

  • Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Children’s Bureau (CB) - National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect (NDACAN)  "Specific activities to be undertaken include: maintaining and expanding the existing archive of data sets; promoting the use of the data sets among researchers through a variety of training, technical assistance, dissemination and marketing activities; maintaining and updating a digital library of research publications using datasets in the archive; conducting ad hoc analyses of selected data sets within the archive for CB staff and other requestors; creation of an online dashboard to query to retrieve tables and aggregate statistics on a variety of topics related to child maltreatment and child welfare; and continuing operation of a listserv of child welfare researchers around the country to promote the exchange of ideas and information that will help the field to move forward."

In other data news, on July 7th, Nextgov published an article entitled 2 Data Brokers Pledge to Halt Location Data Collection After Abortion Ruling. In this story, Alexandra Kelley describes how two large data companies have pledged to permanently stop selling user location data of individuals who seek to visit abortion clinics, and the precedent this might set.

  • "Democrat leaders have issued many calls for large tech companies to stop collecting geographical and location data, as well as other health-related data from users following the threat of Roe v. Wade’s overturning. Earlier this week, Google acquiesced to these requests, saying that its apps and search engine will not store location and health data, and the company will give users tools to easily delete this history."
