Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to Data & Analytics companies that share our passion for serving the Public Sector. Our featured items begin with INSCOM's request for White Papers from industry for mature Commercial Off‐The‐Shelf (COTS) solutions that support its use and analysis of Open Source Intelligence via a platform that raises warnings/red flags based upon a broad range of ingested intelligence.
In other data news, on October 27th, Homeland Security Today published an article entitled Machine Learning and Data Fusion Enable Improved Decision Intelligence to Screen Asylum-Seekers and Refugees. In this story, Noam Zitzman describes how Federal officials responsible for homeland security can leverage machine learning and data fusion to improve the screening of refugees and asylum-seekers as their cases are adjudicated upon arrival in the U.S. Since immigration management and border security are truly data-driven processes, the introduction of these technologies is viewed as being not only more efficient, but also potentially more comprehensive and consistent.

“ML (Machine Learning) has already demonstrated effectiveness in immigration management applications. For example, the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees has tested automatic face and dialect recognition, name transliteration, and analysis of mobile data devices for identity verification to support decision intelligence in the asylum determination process. Meanwhile, UK police forces use predictive policing algorithms such as PredPol, Sweden has used migration algorithms to forecast future migration flows, and Switzerland has tested an algorithm to improve refugee integration.”
