In other data news, on January 10th, FCW published an article entitled Federal health plan could be spending $1B a year on ineligible dependents, GAO says. In this story, Carten Cordell describes how the Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently discovered that the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Federal Employees Health Benefits program could be wasting $1 billion a year in improper payments by providing benefits to family members who are no longer eligible.
-
“While OPM has strived to reduce the risk of fraud and improper payments in the nation's largest employer-sponsored health care program in recent years by implementing policy changes to both request proof of family member eligibility and verify eligibility for some new enrollments, it does not have a way to remove those currently receiving benefits.”
