In other data news, on January 17th, Consumer Reports  published an article entitled Each Facebook User Is Monitored by Thousands of Companies. This story details the extensive surveillance of consumers' online activity, revealing that participants who volunteered their data for a Consumer Reports study had their information sent to Facebook by an average of 2,230 companies. The examination of server-to-server tracking exposed the involvement of prominent retailers and credit reporting firms, raising concerns about the scale of data sharing and the need for improved privacy and transparency measures.

  • 'This type of tracking which occurs entirely outside of the user’s view is just so far outside of what people expect when they use the internet,' Caitriona Fitzgerald, deputy director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, told The Markup in an interview. Fitzgerald said that while users are likely aware that Meta knows what they are doing while they are on Facebook and Instagram, 'they don’t expect Meta to know what stores they walk into or what news articles they’re reading or every site they visit online.'”

Proactive approach from White House, NIST needed for facial recognition technology, report says

“It is crucial that governments make tackling these issues a priority,” Jennifer Mnookin, University of Wisconsin-Madison chancellor and co-chair of the committee that wrote the report, said in a statement. “Failing or choosing not to adopt policies and regulations on the development and use of facial recognition technology would effectively cede decisionmaking and rulemaking on these important questions of great public concern entirely to the private sector and the marketplace.”

International data governance: Managing data across borders

Data governance is particularly challenging for organizations that operate globally, and the vendors that support them. There’s an ever-growing need for software vendors to more deeply understand customers and their respective responsibilities. As a service provider, software vendors are entrusted with protecting customer data across borders. Should a security incident occur involving data that is protected within a certain region, vendors need to be clear on both theirs and their customers’ responsibilities to properly mitigate it.
