Goals For a Data-Driven Coast Guard | On 30 November 2022, OpenAI released a beta version of ChatGPT, a large language model with a chatbot interface. Data nerds everywhere rejoiced. Joking aside, a productivity revolution began on that date, and so did an AI arms race. Today, more than 1.96 million open-source large language models are available for download through a project called Hugging Face. There is situational irony to a paragraph that starts with “joking aside,” and concludes by referencing a community-led project called “Hugging Face.” The culture that gives form to this sort of humor does not have to be fully incorporated to make the Coast Guard a friendly place for data nerds. But the Coast Guard does need to develop a culture friendlier to analysts and data scientists. | |
