Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. This week, our featured opportunity is not a contract solicitation, but a request from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for industry feedback on how to reduce barriers to the expansion of commercial data and analytic services within the community.
In other data news, on August 25th, Homeland Security Today published an article entitled ICE Has Limited Ability to Identify and Combat Trade-Based Money Laundering Schemes, OIG Says. In this story, Kylie Bielby describes the lack of technology and staffing expertise at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), impacting the agency's ability to identify and combat trade-based money laundering (TBML) schemes. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) recommends that ICE implement prioritized technology upgrades and allocate sufficient permanent staff to address these limitations, as the current situation hampers their ability to identify criminal proceeds and poses a threat to U.S. national security.
-
“OIG found that ICE does not have automated technology to identify import commodities at high risk for TBML schemes. Instead, it identifies TBML activities through manual searches of import records, which is time-consuming.”
