Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with the Commerce Data Hub, an initiative designed to acquire commercial data for use across all Commerce bureaus. The program aims to procure data as an enterprise, provide shared access to information, and promote standardized data delivery - covering a variety of subject areas including supply chain, transportation, business governance, consumer, financial, health, real estate, and IT/telecommunications data.

  • Department of Commerce, Enterprise Services — Commerce Data Hub Pilot Program - The purpose of this Statement of Work is to obtain commercially available data on behalf of Department of Commerce (DOC) under a Commerce Data Hub pilot program. The Data Hub pilot program consists of an open solicitation subject to FAR 13.5, Simplified Procedures for Certain Commercial Products and Commercial Services, under which sources may submit proposals for delivery of commercial data within the general subject areas identified herein.

In other data news, on June 14th, The Verge published an article entitled US spy agencies are buying the same surveillance data advertisers crave. In this story, Wes Davis details the US governmen's acquisition of personal information, including location data, from commercial data brokers, raising concerns about privacy and civil liberties. A report by the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) reveals the sensitivity of the data and the potential for deanonymization, while also acknowledging its value for intelligence purposes. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) has introduced privacy legislation in response to these practices.

  • The ODNI paints a picture of a government indiscriminately sucking up data. In a series of recommendations, it urges the US intelligence community (IC) to catalog how it’s using the data — something it calls 'complex undertaking' that will require carefully reviewing things like procurement contracts.”
