Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to Data & Analytics companies that share our passion for serving the Public Sector. Our featured items begin with the Department of Agriculture's Sources Sought notification for a subscription to Global Trade Data. The data subscription will support standalone analyses of official merchandise trade using a harmonized coding system, as well as integrate with the Foreign Agricultural Service's (FAS) Global Agricultural Trade System (GATS).
In other data news, on August 3rd, CNN Business published an article entitled FTC weighs sweeping new rules on 'commercial surveillance' and Big Data. In this story, Brian Fung discusses the Federal Trade Commission's consideration of a plan to write sweeping new regulations that could restrict how businesses collect and use consumer data, hinting at a possible crackdown on commercial algorithms and a sprawling economy powered by the personal information of millions of Americans.
-
"The decision to solicit feedback, approved in a 3-2 vote by the agency's commissioners, reflects FTC Chair Lina Khan's aggressive push to curb what she has described as a 'commercial surveillance' industry that profits from lax cybersecurity practices and weak restrictions on how consumer data can be collected, shared and analyzed. It also targets what agency officials described as a steady stream of data breaches that have led to repeated leaks of consumer information in recent years, along with businesses' handling of digital health data, an area that has come under increasing scrutiny following the Supreme Court's decision this year to overturn federal abortion rights."
