Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with the Marine Corps’ search for a COTS tool to detect and remove fake social media accounts impersonating senior leaders across major platforms. The solution must automate discovery, risk analysis, and takedown workflows while providing dashboards, malware alerts, and customizable reports.

Department of Defense, Department of the Navy, United State Marine Corps — Social Networking Site Tool RFI - This requirement is for Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) automated social networking capability to provide the ability to conduct effective and efficient discovery, reporting and removal of imposter social media accounts. The COTS capability will be used to protect the best interests of the USMC. Using latest available COTS automation technology will reduce both human and network resource expenditure, time and work factor efforts allowing for a comprehensive social media review. The COTS also will be used in integrating the discovery of malware and trends with hashtags as an additional aspect of pinpointing emerging trends concerning the USMC, allowing for quick identification of threat agents and entry points for malware and impersonators trying to gain followership through discussion topics.
In other data news, on May 22nd, The Intercept published an article entitled U.S. Spy Agencies Are Getting a One-Stop Shop to Buy Your Most Sensitive Personal Data. In this story, Sam Biddle describes how U.S. intelligence agencies quietly fund and influence commercial surveillance tools used by foreign allies, raising concerns about transparency and democratic accountability. The resulting “data marketplace” gives 18 agencies fast, shared access to sensitive data like smartphone location pings and biometrics, with critics warning it entrenches mass surveillance and bypasses Fourth Amendment protections.
-
“The ICDC project reflects a fundamental dissonance within the intelligence community, which acknowledges that CAI is a major threat to the public while refusing to cease buying it. 'The government would never have been permitted to compel billions of people to carry location tracking devices on their persons at all times, to log and track most of their social interactions, or to keep flawless records of all their reading habits,' the ODNI wrote in its 2022 report.”
